Ry’s health crisis forces her to face the future she’s been avoiding. She fears surgery could cause memory loss, but stopping her medication makes things worse. In the end, Ry learns that freedom also means accepting the consequences of her choices.

Ry arrives in Mallorca behaving as though her future has already been decided by epilepsy. There is an important distinction between the movie and Anna Todd’s source novel, however. Todd’s book goes further with a one-year-later epilogue: Ry and Julián remain together and travel between Mallorca and Texas for her hospital appointments, while Julián names his restored boat My Sunrise, Oriah. Isolde is living in her restored childhood home with Mateo, and the disputed land has been protected after SetCorp’s deal collapses.

Those book details reinforce what the movie’s ending is getting at, but they should not all be treated as additional movie scenes. Todd had previously teased that the adaptation would make changes to the novel, meaning the two versions aren’t interchangeable. What the film leaves us with is simpler: Ry does not get certainty; she gets a future. Her illness hasn’t magically vanished, and falling for Julián hasn’t solved it. What changes is Ry’s willingness to face what comes next instead of living as though the ending has already been written.

That makes The Last Sunrise considerably less morbid than its title suggests. Ry spends the summer fearing an ending and leaves it finally willing to plan for what comes afterward.
