The Drama: Zendaya and Robert Pattinson Eye to Become 5th A24 Movie to Cross $100M

Despite concerns about potential backlash over its provocative twist, The Drama is currently on track to become the fifth A24 title to cross the $100 million mark. Even with competition from movies like Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy, the movie is demonstrating strong legs, dropping just 38% in its second weekend.

Having already grossed $65 million worldwide, including $30.8 million domestically as of April 12 (via Variety), the movie is closing in on its break-even point, estimated at around $70 million. While it’s well-positioned to turn a solid profit for A24 following its modest budget of $28 million, the bigger question now is how its overall performance will stack up against the studio’s other releases.

Can The Drama Become the Highest-Grossing A24 Movie?

Although just a few years ago, mid-budget original movies were a rarity in the mainstream landscape, A24 has played an essential role in reviving audience interest in titles outside the IP-driven model. The past few months, in particular, have been pretty strong for A24, with Marty Supreme becoming the studio’s first entry to cross $100 million at the domestic box office, and the Josh Safdie sports drama currently stands as its highest-grossing release.

While it is still too early to determine where the Zendaya and Robert Pattinson-led The Drama will ultimately land, early tracking suggests a potential finish in the $110 million to $150 million range (via Film Updates). Even at the higher end of that projection, the movie is unlikely to surpass the overall gross of Marty Supreme.

With the Challengers and The Batman star leaving their mark in the first quarter of the year, they will be rejoining forces for two of the biggest movies of the year. In summer, fans will witness them in the star-studded ensemble, The Odyssey, one of the most anticipated releases of the summer.

As for the holiday season, they will once again reunite in the third chapter of Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune saga, which has the potential to become the most celebrated fantasy trilogy since The Lord of the Rings.
