The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 was an off-kilter episode that explored many of the side characters’ plots through the lens of the central story. Perhaps the highlight of the episode was Valorie Curry’s religious dilemma acting as Firecracker. The final scene of the episode saw her fully devote herself to Homelander, something he seemingly wanted all along.
With one swift motion, he killed her by impaling her head on a statue right after she professed her undying love and support. Firecracker appears to do her best to convince Homelander that even a God needs real and authentic love, meaning that his act of killing her cements his vision of a God who wants devotees filled with fear (his version of love).
The ending of Episode 4 showed Homelander receive visions in the Church and from Madelyn Stilwell, with the central idea that Homelander wants devotees. His act of creating the Democratic Church of America, which only has loyal supporters, was the first clue that it was never love he wanted. Now that he knows where to get V1, what will stop him?

Homelander’s Godly V1 Plan Delayed Again
Homelander‘s plan for godly ascension through Compound V1 is delayed yet again. The Boys has now dedicated three whole episodes of its final season to just searching for V1, meeting dead ends repeatedly. Episode 5 is clearly not an episode that was meant to drastically move the plot forward, but we now only have three episodes left.
There are many questions still left unanswered in The Boys, including the absence of Gen V’s supes. After the cancellation of Gen V, perhaps Prime Video’s plan was to leave them in the dust all along. The Boys are struggling to be a cohesive team, inching slowly towards their goals.
A heartwarming scene from this episode proves that Butcher has some humanity in him, so will this mean that Annie and Kimiko will get to survive? All these questions are hanging heavily in the air, and it looks like this entire season is going to be devoted to Homelander’s slow ascension to God (or not).
One-Shots: Breath of Fresh Air in Offbeat Episode
Black Noir and The Deep in The Boys | Amazon MGM StudiosThe Boys Season 5 Episode 5, titled One-Shots, offered us all a breath of fresh air with its many new stories. Side characters, including Firecracker, Black Noir, Sister Sage, and Terror were given the limelight along with the much-anticipated Supernatural reunion.
It was exciting to see Misha Collins, Jared Padalecki, and Jensen Ackles share the screen once again, despite not being the focus of the episode.
Looks like showrunner Eric Kripke just wanted to have fun with this episode, judging by the meta cameos from Seth Rogen and other members of the crew. Firecracker steals the show by a mile, offering a nuanced look into religious upheaval.
Black Noir gets an artist’s story as a theatre actor who just wants to retain integrity and upstage his toxic coworker, The Deep, who remains as obnoxious as ever. Terror gave us all scares as he dove into chocolate, making the Boys work together to save him.
Sister Sage and Ashley’s one-shot focused more on the manipulative mind games that each side was playing. Sage’s confession of wanting to see the world burn and live her life in peace might finally be the revealing hand in her chess game.
Soldier Boy proved his support for Homelander despite an opportunity to end him for good. The father is slowly warming up to his son, making for a very interesting few episodes that are coming up in The Boys.
