How to Unlock Torment 1 in Diablo 4?

Torment difficulties in Diablo 4 are not for the faint of heart, as they’re extremely tougher than the Standard Difficulties, but they also offer significantly better rewards, such as Ancenstral Legendaries and Ancenstral Mythic Uniques. Additionally, you’ll earn more Gold and XP with increased drops for Legendaries, Mythics, Mythic Uniques, and Class-specific Charms.

Unlocking the first Torment difficulty, Torment 1, requires you to reach a specific Level and complete a particular Tier in the Pit of Artificers. Since the Torment difficulties have been bumped from 4 to 12 in the latest Season 13, we’ll break down how you can unlock Torment 1 to begin your Torment journey in Diablo 4.

Here’s How to Unlock Torment 1 in Diablo 4

Firstly, you need to reach Level 70, which unlocks the Priority Quest in Cerrigar, Scosglen, related to the Pit of the Artificers in Diablo 4. If you have completed the base game campaign, this Quest will be automatically marked on your map with a Totem. If the Quest doesn’t appear on your map, ensure that you’ve completed the campaign and your character is at Level 70.

The Pit of the Artificers, a.k.a. the Pit, is basically a timed dungeon encounter where you’ll have 15 minutes to kill hordes of monsters and a boss at the end of the run. To run the Pit, you need Artificer’s Stones, which are obtainable from practically every game mode available in Diablo 4, especially in world content such as Helltides, World Bosses, Nightmare Dungeons, etc.

When you’ve collected enough Artificer’s Stones and have reached Level 70, head to Cerrigar and interact with the Artificer’s Obelisk located inside the town to run the Pit. Before starting a run, you need to select what Tier of difficulty you’re comfortable with. The higher the Tier, the more difficult your run will be. Specific Tiers within the Pit are equal to the other difficulties in the base game.

If you’re running the Pit for the first time in Diablo 4, you’ll have access up to Tier 7, whose difficulty is equivalent to the game’s Penitent difficulty. Once you manage to beat Tier 7 within the allotted time, you’ll unlock extra Tiers and eventually unlock the Torment difficulties. For Torment 1, you need to complete a Tier 10 run in the Pit of the Artificers in Diablo 4.

The more Tiers you beat, the more Torment difficulties you’ll unlock. As soon as you complete Tier 10 in the Pit, you’ll unlock the Torment 1 difficulty. If you’re looking for a bigger challenge, unlock the remaining 11 Torment difficulties by running through the higher Tiers in the Pit.

These Tiers are not for the weak, so bring your strongest builds and your A-game into the play if you want to unlock Torment 1 and the remaining difficulties in Diablo 4. With that out of the way, one question remains: how do you change the difficulty in-game?

How to Change Difficulty in Diablo 4?

While you can change the difficulty in Diablo 4 when you’re loading into a game via the World Tiers, there’s a more convenient method to do it on the fly. Head to any Difficulty Statues in the game to change to your preferred difficulty. Since we’re discussing Torment 1, naturally, you’d want to check out what this difficulty offers.

These Difficulty Statues are located in specific parts of the world. You can find one in the town of Cerrigar itself. If you’re searching for more locations, head to the Difficulty Statue at the northeast corner of Kyovashad, which is the first major city you get to explore in Diablo 4‘s base campaign.

There’s also another Statue located in the heart of Kurast, which is the primary location for the Vessels of Hatred expansion. When you encounter these Statues, interact with them and change the difficulty on the fly. Once you’ve completed Tier 10 at the Pit and unlocked Torment 1, head to one of these Statues and switch the difficulty.
