Sick is a fast-paced slasher thriller that uses the early days of COVID-19 as its backdrop for a classic survival story. It taps into real-world fears from the pandemic era, like isolation, and that’s what makes it such a timely and brilliant movie! I felt like, compared to other slashers, it just uses its runtime so efficiently, and doesn’t complicate the premise.

7 Zack Snyder’s Justice League 

After Joss Whedon’s take turned out to be a big disappointment, fans demanded the Snyder cut, and that’s how we had Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The story follows Batman and Wonder Woman as they assemble a team of heroes after Superman’s death, and prepare to defend Earth from Steppenwolf and Darkseid. I like how this version dives into the mythology and prioritizes tone over pacing, plus the ensemble cast finally gets some room to breathe. It’s a 4 hour 2 minutes long movie, so make sure you have enough time before diving into it!

6 Host (2020) 

Host is a compact yet impactful supernatural movie about a group of friends who meet virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. They fool around, and one participant fabricates a ghost story, accidentally inviting a dangerous supernatural presence into their homes. I am not exactly into screenlife format movies, but I loved Host for the way it builds a sense of immediacy and claustrophobic tension.

5 Palm Springs (2020) 

Palm Springs features Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. The film begins with a sunny wedding, where Nyles seems unusually relaxed, and Sarah is struggling. The two cross paths, form a bond, and soon she discovers that Nyles is trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over again. So, it’s a sci-fi comedy, with great twists and a witty script that makes it definitely worth a watch! To me, the most effective thing about Palm Springs is how it has a bit of both nihilism and warmth.

4 Soul (2020) 

Soul is the kind of movie that will make me reconsider my life choices, and hopefully it will do the same for you! Jamie Foxx voices Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher, in this animated fantasy film. He meets 22, a mysterious soul with little interest in the life of Earth, after an accident that sends him to the cosmic realm. Together, they go on an unusual journey, which makes Joe rethink what makes life truly meaningful.

3 Roma (2018) 

Roma is an intimate black-and-white drama where we follow Cleo, a quiet domestic worker, and Sofía, a mother. Cleo cares for Sofía’s family, while also going through her personal challenges, in a politically tense climate. I find it beautiful how the movie makes the ordinary feel so monumental, without ever trying to force it upon us. The stunning cinematography, deeply moving and human storytelling, along with authentic performances by first-time actors, make Roma an Oscar-winning movie.

2 Manchester by the Sea (2016) 

Lee is forced to return to his hometown after his brother passes away. He learns that he’s now the legal guardian of his nephew Patrick, a responsibility he’s unprepared to accept. Moreover, he’s struggling with painful memories tied to the town, all while trying his best to support Patrick through loss and uncertainty. I felt Casey Affleck was beyond amazing in this movie, and I was more than happy when he won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Lee, and the movie also earned the Best Original Screenplay award.

1 CODA (2021) 

CODA is an uplifting coming-of-age drama about Ruby Rossi and her deaf family, where she is the only hearing member. She is a high school student who helps run her family’s successful business by serving as their interpreter, but she discovers her natural talent for singing; however, pursuing her passion could mean leaving her family behind. 

I was impressed by CODA’s authentic representation of the Deaf community, and it’s no surprise that the Sian Heder-directed movie earned three Oscars: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
