Nicholas Hoult can work with 5000 rats on Nosferatu but he draws the line at fake ice cream. Hoult shared his experience of being given fake ice cream for a scene and recalled how he acted like a diva and refused to eat it. Interestingly, a few days earlier, he shared another story where he worked in a disgusting situation with almost 5000 rats.
Hoult has been part of some amazing projects and his dedication to each role has earned him some critical praise. In his latest film Nosferatu, Hoult stars alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård, playing the role of Thomas Hutter. He is also set to play the main villain Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman.
Fake ice cream gives Nicholas Hoult the ick
Nicholas Hoult revealed the one situation where he drew the line while working on a film. For viewers, Hoult could do any role even when he had to look the most disgusting on the screen. He proved to be an incredible performer in Warm Bodies, Mad Max: Fury Road, the X-Men films, and recently in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu.
While he had worked in some disgusting situations, Hoult refused to work in one scene as he found it too “foul” to work. Explaining to Capital FM, Hoult shared that he was offered an ice cream to eat during a scene in an undisclosed film. He shared that he looked forward to the scene but when he tasted the ice cream, it was “lard mixed with food coloring and sugar.”
Hoult shared that it was the first time that he behaved like a diva on set. He went to the production and asked what he was given instead of an actual ice cream. They explained that they had to find this alternative because the ice cream easily melted over the duration of filming. Hoult simply said to them, “That’s not going to work for me.”
After he outright told them, “That’s absolutely foul, I can’t eat that,” the production had to then buy real ice cream for the actor to eat in the scene. Hoult’s co-star Lily-Rose Depp too agreed that the ‘lard’ ice cream was disgusting. When the clip of the interview was posted to X, fans too agreed with the Superman actor.
One fan shared that he “would have done the same thing,” while another agreed that “lard mixed with food coloring is NOT the ice cream experience.” While fans call it “vile”, they’re forgetting the fact that Hoult has gotten himself in more disgusting situations for a film than just fake ice cream.
Fake ice cream is not okay for Nicholas Hoult but he can work with 5000 rats
Elsewhere in the Capital FM interview, Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp shared their experience working with rats. Hoult shared that there were over 5000 live rats used in the film. When asked if they were okay with rats, Depp shared that they were not her “personal fave.” In the scene where Emma Corrin gets covered in rats, she recalled thinking, “I do not envy you right now.”
Hoult also shared that the rats were incontinent, which made the smell on the set rather disgusting to get through. Hoult also shared in The Graham Norton Show that it was Bill Skarsgård who was left traumatized after his experience with the furry rodents. Hoult shared that The Crow actor was in the Count Orlok makeup and locked in a sarcophagus, covered in maggots and rats.
The scene had to be filmed a number of times as Hoult committed a couple of mistakes. He shared with Graham Norton:
It is an irony that Hoult was okay with the smelly rats but he couldn’t deal with a fake ice cream on the set. Nosferatu is now running successfully in theaters.
