How many episodes are there in Squid Game season 2?

Squid Game season 2 has only seven episodes, two fewer than season 1, which had nine. While many might be disappointed by this season’s shorter run, the creators have good news for everyone. The series will return for season 3 sometime in 2025.

The series creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed in an interview with Deadline that he wrote seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back. During the process, he decided to end season 2 with episode 7 to give the show a perfect cliffhanger so that season 3 can begin with a bang. He said, “I wrote seasons two and three at the same time, and we were in production for both simultaneously, and currently we are in the post-production process for Season 3.”

Explaining his point of view, Dong-hyuk further added,

When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven, so I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that. That’s why I had first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3.

The first season earned 14 Emmy nominations, among which they scored six awards, including Lee Jung-jae and Lee You-mi for best performances and creator Dong-hyuk for directing. Hwang Dong-hyuk became the first Asian to receive the Outstanding Directing for Drama Series award.

Season 2 will feature Gi-hun, the winner of this deadly game, once again. The 456th number player will re-enter the game after three years in an attempt to figure out who is the mastermind behind this game, now that the creator Oh Il-nam is no more.

Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun), the police officer who had infiltrated the games in search of his brother, In-ho, seemingly died in his brother’s hands as In-ho was working as the Front Man. However, in Squid Game season 2, Jun-ho will make a comeback and be seen as a traffic police. The Recruiter (played by Gong-yoo) has also returned in season 2.

Then there’s No-eul (Park Gyu-young), a woman who works in a park after escaping from North Korea to South Korea. However, in the process, she gets separated from her child. After trying to find her daughter through investigators, she finally accepts into the game as a pink guard for an offer of help to find her child.
