River Cartwright’s reunion with Sid Baker takes a sinister turn on Slow Horses Season 6, leaving him unconscious at his grandfather’s house just when he believes the worst is behind him. And after everything Jackson Lamb’s team has endured, I wasn’t prepared for another potential farewell.
Spoiler Alert !!!
Major spoilers for Slow Horses Season 6 ahead!
Slow Horses Season 6 Episode 5 saw River rescue Sid from a Russian handover, while Diana Taverner’s clandestine Kazan operation threatened to expose MI5’s dirty dealings. The finale, Judgment Day, brings that political debacle to a head as Lamb devises another underhanded solution to protect his people. With Russian assassins, compromised officials, and old enemies demanding retribution, Slough House finally gets a chance to mourn its dead. Unfortunately, River’s apparent escape from danger proves painfully premature.
River’s Mysterious Collapse Points to a Russian Trap
Credit: Apple TVRiver’s apparent reunion with Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) turns into another nightmare when he arrives at his late grandfather David Cartwright’s house. Following a memorial service for Slough House’s fallen agents, Catherine Standish passes along a neighbor’s message about lights being left on at the property. River recognizes the clue immediately, remembering Sid’s promise to keep a light on for him.
He finds Sid inside and prepares a romantic surprise while she showers. While preparing the surprise, River moves a crowbar and rubs his fingers as though something sticky has coated them. Moments later, he convulses and collapses, suggesting that the object was contaminated. The weapon provides the strongest clue to his condition.
Earlier, River had picked up the same crowbar while investigating mysterious calls at his grandfather’s house. Russian assassins Jim and Jane subsequently visited the property, and Jim handled a suspicious container while wearing protective gloves. Jim’s handling of the container suggests the crowbar was poisoned, although the substance and River’s fate remain unknown. I found it particularly cruel that River survives assassins and betrayal, only to collapse from an earlier trap. Sid may still save him.
Interestingly, Mick Herron’s Slough House features a similar trap involving a contaminated doorknob, which the show appears to replace with the crowbar.
Lamb Trades Cantor to Save Slough House
Credit: Apple TVJackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) spends the finale rescuing his agents while dismantling the conspiracy surrounding Diana Taverner’s unauthorized assassination in Kazan. Diana (Kristin Scott Thomas) had used money supplied through former Home Secretary Peter Judd to finance the operation, unaware of its Russian origins.
Media billionaire Damien Cantor wanted access to the Russian television market and had been negotiating through intermediary Natasha Carrington. Their arrangement became disastrous when Russian intelligence obtained incorrect MI5 personnel records, leading assassins Jim and Jane to target Slough House. The Kremlin also wanted Diana exposed and removed from her position. Lamb recognizes an opportunity to turn the conspirators against one another. He convinces Natasha that Cantor can be presented as the double agent responsible for the Kazan operation, diverting Russian attention from Sid.
Cantor consequently finds himself aboard a plane bound for Sofia, where the Russians are expected to receive him. I appreciated Lamb’s ruthlessness here because Cantor has spent the season treating intelligence officers as expendable business assets. Being handed over to the people he hoped to impress is an exquisitely bitter comeuppance. Cantor’s death remains unconfirmed, and Vassily may not accept Lamb’s explanation.
Meanwhile, Diana escapes trouble by shifting suspicion onto Judd, who gets arrested for treason. Her survival frustrated me after what she did to Sid, although Lamb knows removing her could leave MI5 even more vulnerable.
Slow Horses Ending Explained: Is River Really Dead?
Credit: Apple TVRiver’s death remains unconfirmed, despite the alarming circumstances of his collapse. The finale also brings several painful losses into focus. Emma Flyte dies while protecting the agents during Frank Harkness’ assault, while JK Coe’s murder occurred earlier in the season. Jim dies during Episode 5’s confrontation with River and Sid, while Jane is killed in the finale, ending the assassins’ immediate threat. Former agent Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar) survives her injuries and joins Lamb’s team at the memorial, marking a welcome return after her departure from Slough House.
I was glad to see another familiar survivor, especially after everything Lamb’s team has lost. But River’s poisoning threatens that relief. Sid could now save him, just as he once helped save her. River deserves an explanation for the trap, and Diana deserves far more scrutiny for the decisions that brought Russian assassins into his life. The finale strongly suggests that a contaminated crowbar causes his collapse, but neither the substance nor his ultimate fate is established. Sid may be nearby, although the episode ends before showing whether she discovers him.
Will Sid rescue River before the suspected nerve agent kills him, or has Slough House lost another of its most beloved agents? Share your theories below, and follow FandomWire for more recaps and ending explainers.
