After fifteen years away, the ogre is officially coming back. Universal and DreamWorks Animation have set Shrek 5 for June 30, 2027. A teaser trailer for the movie was dropped recently, with many elements to get the fans excited. Fans are buzzing over everything from Donkey’s makeover monologue to the Gingerbread Man getting “caked up.”
Returning directors Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are joined by co-director Brad Ableson for this movie. More importantly, the cast of this new movie puts our original Shrek voice actors alongside the high-profile newcomers. Here’s every confirmed voice so far, ranked not by star power but by how central each character is to the Shrek universe.
7 Conrad Vernon – Gingerbread Man
Gingerbread Man in Shrek 5 | Credits: DreamWorks/Universal PicturesGingy lands at the bottom because he’s a beloved garnish rather than a main course. Conrad Vernon has voiced the cookie since the 2001 original, while pulling double duty as co-director in the later movies. Across the first four films, the Gingerbread Man went from Farquaad’s interrogation victim to a recurring source of comic chaos.
However, he has never been a plot engine, and he isn’t expected to be one in the upcoming movie. The teaser leans into exactly that role, handing him a cheeky “I’m caked up like a freaking bakery” gag.
6 Marcello Hernandez – Fergus
Fergus and Farkle in Shrek 5 | Credits: DreamWorks/Universal PicturesShrek and Fiona’s ogre triplets have all grown up and are the main characters in the fifth movie. SNL breakout Marcello Hernández is voicing Fergus in the new movie. The casting was announced on Thanksgiving 2025 in a playful clip where Hernández committed a little too hard. He slathered himself in green body paint before being reminded he was only doing the voice.
Fergus and his two siblings represent the franchise’s generational pivot toward Shrek’s kids. His screen time and his importance to the plot remain unknown, so Hernández’s weight in the story can only be speculated from what we saw in the teaser.
5 Skyler Gisondo – Farkle
Fergus and Farkle with their family in Shrek 5 | Credits: DreamWorks/Universal PicturesThe second of the triplet, Farkle, is voiced by Skyler Gisondo, who’s fresh off playing Jimmy Olsen in the Superman reboot. Like his brother, Farkle is one of the ogre children glimpsed briefly in Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After, now elevated to an active part of the story.
Just like Hernández, Gisondo brings comedic chops from projects like Booksmart and The Righteous Gemstones. Both brothers are currently wildcards to the plot. Farkle’s true significance depends entirely on how much the sequel invests in its younger ogres.
4 Zendaya – Felicia
Zendaya voices Felicia in Shrek 5 | Credits: DreamWorks/Universal PicturesZendaya is the most popular newcomer, suggesting that she will have as important a role as the original returning characters. She voices the role of Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. A multi-generational story almost certainly orbits the eldest child, and Zendaya’s casting signals that Felicia is being built as a genuine lead rather than a cameo.
It may even be possible that the studio sees her as a face of the franchise’s future. Until the film arrives, she’s the most important of the next-generation trio, ranking her above her brothers despite all three arriving fresh.
3 Cameron Diaz – Princess Fiona
Princess Fiona in the Shrek movies | Credits: DreamWorks/Universal PicturesAfter appearing in all four movies as the female lead, Cameron Diaz returns to voice Fiona in the fifth movie. She was the franchise’s answer to all the Disney princess tropes. She is a fairy-tale princess who fights, embraces her ogre form, and refuses to be rescued on anyone else’s terms.
As the mother of the new triplets and Shrek’s equal partner, she’s structurally essential to a story now centered on family. Diaz hasn’t voiced the role since 2010, making her comeback one of the sequel’s biggest draws. The emotional core of the Shrek household runs straight through her.
2 Eddie Murphy – Donkey
When Shrek returns after a decade and a half, Eddie Murphy’s Donkey is the voice fans are most eager to hear again. The character appears as a charismatic wisecracker sometimes and a nervous wreck at other times. He runs his mouth a bit too much, annoying the other characters in the movies. Murphy captured this persona so completely that he made Donkey an unforgettable character rather than just another sidekick.
The teaser proves nothing’s changed, with Donkey rattling off plans to get his arms “yoked” and his back “jacked” for the big-city adventure ahead. Even in jail, he annoys the entire family with his rendition of Player’s Baby Come Back. As Shrek’s inseparable best friend, he’s the franchise’s beating comedic heart and its indispensable number two.
1 Mike Myers – Shrek
Mike Myers reprises the cynical and solitude-loving ogre for the fifth time. He would easily be at the top of this list, as it is his name on the marquee, and every other character revolves around his arc. From guarding his swamp to reluctantly becoming royalty, Shrek has carried four films on his sarcastic shoulders. The sequel’s family-driven premise only deepens his role as a father now.
The new teaser shows that he and Donkey are reuniting for one more journey. And fittingly, they end up behind bars with the rest of the family. He’s the gravitational center of this entire ogre universe, and no character comes close to matching his importance.
