Sergei Bobrovsky’s new Maple Leafs mask is a secret no more.

Hours after the design of his Toronto head gear was unveiled on Instagram by renowned artist David Gunnarsson (@daveart) on Saturday afternoon, Bobrovsky sported the mask as he started in goal against the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena.
“The powerful Archangel Michael takes command of the design — standing tall as a timeless symbol of strength, courage and protection,” Gunnarsson wrote on Instagram. “The entire story is built on a brick wall background, creating depth and a strong old-school hockey feel throughout the design. On the opposite side, the legendary Toronto Maple Leafs emblem becomes a massive centrepiece, integrated into the brick wall and surrounded by layers of blue, white and hidden details. A design built around faith, power and legacy.”
In his first start with the Leafs in the pre-season split-squad game, Bobrovsky didn’t need much divine intervention, looking sharp as he faced 11 shots before departing, as planned, midway through the second period as Anthony Stolarz took over.

Only a shot by Canadiens centre Phillip Danault beat Bobrovsky, with the goal coming at the 51-second mark of the second. A patient Danault waited out Bobrovsky and put the puck over the netminder from a tight angle for a 1-0 Montreal lead.
On the eve of his 38th birthday, Bobrovsky turned aside all eight shots he saw in the first period, including a couple of one-timers off the stick of Canadiens defenceman Reilly Walsh.
Cheered heartily during pre-game introductions, it was the first look for Bobrovsky with Toronto after signing a three-year, $21-million US contract in free agency with the Leafs in July.
