Game of Thrones was known for its utter disregard for fan-favorite characters and brutal on-screen deaths. The show’s first season finale proved to fans that the series was not messing around and would not hesitate to kill even its biggest stars. While the later seasons may have become fan-pleasing, the deaths in the initial seasons set it apart.

Actress Sibel Kekilli, who played Shae in the show, reportedly begged the creators to not kill her off in the show. The character who becomes close to Tyrion Lannister and eventually betrays him, is strangled to death by the Imp after he escapes from prison, which is one of the most harrowing moments of the show.

Sibel Kekilli played the role of Shae, a young pr*stitute who takes a liking to Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. The two fall in love and Tyrion takes her to King’s Landing despite it being forbidden by his father Tywin Lannister. He places her in the chambers of Sansa Stark as her handmaiden, and regularly meets her.

However, in the fourth season, he sends her away as she is under threat from Tywin and Cersei, despite Shae urging him to go away to Pentos with her. He insults her out of love and sends her away on a ship, but is ultimately betrayed by her when he is on trial for the suspected murder of King Joffrey Baratheon.

Kekilli was reportedly initially surprised that Shae lived through the third season. However, when she asked creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, they revealed that the fourth would be her last, which led to Kekilli reportedly begging the creators to not kill Shae off. However, no one is safe on Game of Thrones.

Kekilli spoke about her conversation with Weiss and Benioff to TV Line,

I asked Dan and David, ‘When is she going to die?’ And they said, ‘Yes Sibel, we have to tell you, it’s going to happen in the fourth season.’ I said, ‘No! Really? The beginning or the end?’ And they said, ‘The end.’ So I begged them every second: ‘Please don’t kill her! She will be a good queen!’ But it didn’t work.

Shae is killed by Tyrion Lannister after he finds her in his father’s bed after he escapes from prison. She tries to kill him and Tyrion strangles her in self-defense, before heading to kill his father. Shae in Game of Thrones differed from the books, with her character being more nonchalant and not in love with Tyrion, like in the show

Before her role in Game of Thrones, Sibel Kekilli had a sprawling career as an actress in German cinema. Originally of Turkish descent, the actress gained prominence with the film Head-on which won her a Lola award for acting. She also starred in When We Leave, which brought her multiple accolades.

Kekilli voiced her anger about German tabloids exposing her past as an adult film star after her Game of Thrones debut. Speaking about having gone down a dark path before her eventual stardom, Kekilli spoke to Variety about the experience,

As you know, my background is Turkish. And I’ve made some decisions in my life, I’ve gone down a certain path because maybe I did not have any choice….And it was traumatic…it’s still traumatizing, it’s painful.

The actress also hinted at the expose affecting her relationship with her family.

Game of Thrones is available to stream on Max.
