George R.R. Martin‘s Fevre Dream is set in the 1800s on the Mississippi River. The story explores business partners Abner Marsh and Joshua York, the latter of whom is secretly a vampire hunter. According to Martin, there were earlier plans to bring the vampiric story to the screen. Despite the numerous meetings he had, none of those attempts really took off.

Martin shared in an interview with Winter Is Coming that he held the rights to the film and had written a screenplay for the same. A few of his recent updates are truly exciting for fans. Martin shared that he had met with Guillermo del Toro about Fevre Dream. Interestingly, del Toro is the go-to name in the industry for monsters and horrors and he made his feature film debut with the vampiric film Cronos.

Martin shared that del Toro is very much interested in the project and wants to do it. However, the project is currently not a priority for the director. Del Toro is currently filming his dream project Frankenstein starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi.

Martin shared that the project would come to fruition as long as both he and del Toro lived long enough. Interestingly, the Pan’s Labyrinth director has also announced that he would completely shift his focus to animated features after a couple more live-action films (via Euronews). Martin shared with Winter Is Coming:

I’ve had meetings with Guillermo del Toro about Fevre Dream. He loves it, he says he wants to do it…but he doesn’t want to do it now. He always has this project first and that project first, and then this other project. But eventually he’ll do Fevre Dream, if he lives that long and I live that long and movies live that long, I don’t know… I think Fevre Dream would be great.

Martin’s novel also delves into a wider world of vampire politics. This aspect of Fevre Dream will be intriguing to fans of Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire because of all the twists and turns.

While Fevre Dream is a long way down the road, George R.R. Martin and Guillermo del Toro have already cast one actor in the role of Abner. Del Toro’s frequent collaborator and original Hellboy actor Ron Perlman has apparently said yes to the project. Martin shared that all they now needed was that $100 million to make the film. He shared with Winter Is Coming:

We wanna star Ron Perlman, we’ve even cast it! My friend Ron Perlman as Abner Marsh. Ron wants to do it. Everybody wants to do it, all we need is $100 million.

He further shared that working with Perlman was “one of the great pleasures” of his life. There is no doubt that studios would line up to invest Martin’s $100 million ask with the team that he has potentially assembled. Fans would also be interested in seeing one of his adaptations outside of Westeros.

Martin has also other projects coming up, which are adaptations of his written works. Martin’s Game of Thrones novella, Tales of Dunk and Egg, is currently getting a television adaptation in Max’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He is also involved in the early development of a series based on Aegon’s Conquest.
