One person is dead after a Thursday night fire in a townhouse on Russell Road. Four people were able to escape the flames.

The Ottawa police arson unit is investigating the cause of the fire.

The fire service said they received multiple calls reporting a fire at a 1600 block townhouse on Russell Road at 10:48 p.m. Thursday May 14 evening. When rescue crew arrived on scene within five minutes, the townhouse was fully ablaze, Ottawa Fire Services said.

One person was found dead inside the home, according to the Ottawa Police Service.

“Under heavy fire conditions, firefighters immediately conducted search and rescue operations while beginning fire suppression efforts,” OFS Fire Chief Paul Hutt said in a press release Friday.

The fire spread from the end-unit residential townhouse and spread to an adjacent unit, OFS said.

Tn total, 10 tenants were displaced by the fire and are receiving support from the Red Cross, the fire service said. Fire fighters were able to bring the blaze under control by 11:59 p.m Thursday.

The origin of the fire is currently unknown. The Ottawa police and fire services said they are investigating the cause of the incident.

“Ottawa Fire Services extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragic event,” Hutt wrote.
