Ghost of Yotei

SUMMARY

  • Ghost of Yotei introduces a significant 300-year leap, making the climactic choices from Ghost of Tsushima irrelevant to the new storyline.
  • While players express excitement, there are concerns about the shift to a female protagonist and the standalone nature of the story
  • Sucker Punch must deliver an engaging narrative that showcases the unique journey of Atsu, all set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Yōtei.

Players are excited after the recent announcement of Ghost of Yotei, as it is the sequel to the highly acclaimed and beloved title Ghost of Tsushima. The new title is not only taking a 300-year leap but also transporting players to the beautiful landscape surrounding Mount Yōtei, in the heart of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) in Japan. Players will embark on this exciting journey with a new female protagonist, Atsu.

Despite all the excitement about the sequel, players have expressed concerns about the introduction of a female protagonist, as some of them wanted to see Jin Sakai continue his journey. However, it looks like they may need to be more worried about the 300-year leap, as it will make the Tsushima ending’s climactic decision irrelevant, particularly regarding its story implications.

Standalone Nature of Ghost of Yotei‘s Story

In Ghost of Tsushima, players faced a very crucial choice at the game’s climax: to kill Shimura, Jin Sakai’s uncle, or to spare him. This decision summarises the whole narrative as showed the tension between traditional samurai values and the brutal reality of warfare. This decision essentially forced players to confront their beliefs about honor and survival.

While this pivotal moment connects deeply with the players, they need to prepare themselves for Ghost of Yotei. Even though the sequel is in the same universe, it is a standalone title that has taken a significant narrative leap: a jump of 300 years into the future. This leap raises a critical question for players: will the choices they made in Tsushima truly matter?

Sadly, the answer is no, since the world and all the characters in the sequel are not attached to Jin’s journey in any way. This means the leap has reset the stakes and the moral dilemma faced by players at the end of Tsushima. That crucial decision has now become a historical footnote rather than an important event that shapes the future of Yotei.

So, instead of participating in heated debates about how the game’s major flaw might be the female protagonist Atsu, players should focus and talk more about the sequel’s standalone narrative and its complete disconnection from the story of Tsushima.

Sucker Punch Needs to Make the Sequel’s Story Epic

With Sucker Punch making the bold decision not to continue the story of the beloved Ghost of Tsushima, they need to present a better narrative that not only eclipses the original game’s story but also showcases why they decided to make a separate narrative in the first place.

With the trailer and screenshot shared by the developers, the backdrop of Mount Yotei already looks spectacular. Now players are waiting to see how developers will present the journey of Atsu as she becomes a hero and discovers more (alongside the players) about the implications of wearing a Ghost Mask.

As players are waiting for more details about the game’s story and its characters, they are hoping that the developers know the risk of taking this path. While players are skeptical about some of the game’s decisions, they also believe that Sucker Punch has the potential to work its magic within the Ghost universe.

In the end, Ghost of Yotei has the potential to craft an unforgettable story that resonates with players. However, it needs to find a way to honor the legacy of Ghost of Tsushima while also carving out a new chapter in gaming history.

What are you most looking forward to in the sequel? Is it the narrative or its beautiful landscape? Tell us in the comment section below.
