Netflix’s latest action thriller, 180, is a South African original that features a relentless descent into the dark side of grief. Directed by Alex Yazbek and led by a powerhouse performance from Prince Grootboom, the film is about a road rage incident gone wrong.
Not a hero-villain story, it is more about a man’s total moral disintegration and how disastrous the ‘male ego’ can be. By the time the credits roll, in a reference to the title, our lead character Zak has a total 180-degree character shift.
The film stars Prince Grootboom as Zak, a man with an uncontrollable temperament. Yet, he is trying to mend his ways and rebuild his life. His wife Porticia and son Mandla serve as his moral compass. But when things unexpectedly take a wrong turn, he lets the worst take over and goes into total vengeance mode.
Here is the deep dive into the tragic and bloody finale of Netflix’s 180.
Spoiler Alert !!!
Spoiler alert for Netflix's 180!
How Does Zak’s Son Mandla Die?
Zak’s son Mandla | Credits: NetflixAt the start of the film, we see Zak driving his son home from school, who tells him that he is being bullied. But Zak tells him to be strong and stand up for himself. On the way home, they run into gunmen who spare Zak’s life because of his son.
While Zak and Mandla escape unscathed, fate is not so kind to them next time. On their way back home from Mandla’s cricket practice, Zak gets into a verbal battle with two guys, Lerumo and Karwas, who hit their car after running over a red light. Mandla begs his father not to engage in a fight, but Zak, unable to control his emotions, punches Lerumo.
This causes Lerumo, a deadly gangster, to pull out his gun. While Karwas tries to dispel the situation, in the ensuing chaos, a shot is fired into Zak’s vehicle. Mandla is caught in the crossfire. While Mandla doesn’t die instantly, he is placed in critical condition at the hospital. Ultimately, Mandla succumbs to his injuries, leaving Zak with a void that he chooses to fill with pure, unadulterated rage. While his wife is battling the loss of her son and needs her husband, Zak ignores her as he goes on a killing spree.
How Does Zak Find Out His Son’s Killer?
Zak in 180 | Credits: NetflixZak trusts the police and believes detectives Layla and Floyd would help him catch his son’s killer. However, when they choose to let one of the gangsters walk away after Zak fails to recognise him in screening and loses his son’s docket, he takes the matter into his own hands.
The grieving father turns into a predator and uses his skills to investigate on his own. By tracking number plates and CCTVs, he manages to track Lerumo and his boss Eezy, who runs a taxi service while operating a crime network.
While he finds Lerumo and is trying to take his pictures, the gangster catches him and kidnaps him, taking him to Eezy’s chop shop and sending an associate to kill him. But Lerumo gets lucky and manages to kill him. Eezy, when he gets to hear this, puts a bounty on his head.
Why Won’t the Police Help Zak in Catching His Son’s Killer?
Detective Floyd | Credits: NetflixOne of the most frustrating and realistic elements of 180 is the systemic failure of the authorities. Zak initially tries to do things “the right way,” but he is met with a wall of indifference and corruption.
The detective assigned to the case, Detective Floyd, is corrupt. Because he, too, is in contact with Eezy and being paid by him, he steals the docket and gives it to Eezy. When Zak murders Lerumo’s associate, Floyd uses it as a way to frame Zak and issues a lookout for him.
Later, when Zak breaks into the chop shop, Lerumo and Eezy catch him and are about to kill him, the police show up due to Porticia’s report that her husband might be in danger. But Floyd once again covers for Eezy and manages to erase evidence.
This betrayal by the system convinces Zak that justice is just a luxury that poor people cannot afford. Now that Eezy is after him and his wife, and the police are of no help, he is further driven towards vengeance.
How Does Zak Take Revenge For His Son’s Murder?
Lerumo in the film | Credits: NetflixZak’s revenge is not the “cool,” choreographed action of a Hollywood blockbuster. It is messy, desperate, and soul-crushing.
Zak may be violent and angry, but he is not as thoughtful as one would think. He gets several chances to kill Lerumo but ends up getting caught instead. Finally, by the end of the film, he manages to catch Lerumo and kills him by driving a vehicle into him.
But Lerumo tells him that it was his fault that his son died. If only Zak had controlled his rage and swallowed his pride, Mandla would still have been alive. Lerumo’s words stab him in the heart. Yet, he still chooses to go after others who were involved.
How Does Netflix’s 180 End and Who Survives?
The ending of 180 is a somber reflection on the cost of vengeance. While Zak “wins” his war, he loses his soul in the process.
After taking care of Lerumo, Zak goes after Eezy, but the crime boss folds quickly and begs him not to kill him. Just as he is about to kill him, Floyd and Layla show up, trying to stop Zak. Zak holds Eezy hostage while the crime boss begs for the police to help.
But then, in a twist, Eezy shouts at Floyd to shoot Zak, remarking what does he even pay Floyd for. Layla, who trusted her partner with her life, is shocked. After hearing Eezy’s confession, Floyd fumbles and shoots him, and he is instead shot by Layla, who has had enough with corrupt officials.
Zak escapes and goes after Karwas. He is about to shoot Karwas when Karwas’s son, Tsatsi, accidentally shoots his own father in the leg while trying to save him. In an emotional turn of events, Zak starts to see his own son in Tsatsi and embraces him while begging forgiveness.
Tsatsi instead turns the gun on his head, but before he could kill him, his father stops him. Seeing Karwas embracing Tsatsi, something changes in Zak, and he realizes the gravity of his mistake. Not only did he lose his son Mandla due to his anger, but he also lost his brother Zuko (murdered by Lerumo), who went to jail in his place so that Zak could continue studying in the past.
The film concludes with the haunting realization that while Zak caught his son’s killer, the “justice” he found didn’t bring Mandla back. His pursuit of justice is ironic, as it was his violent nature that took the life of his son. Having spent years burying his past, by choosing to let violence triumph once again, he also killed the good man he had fought so hard to become. In doing so, he also ignores his wife’s pleas and fails to offer her comfort when she needs it the most.
As he sits in the silence of the aftermath, it’s clear that while the road rage incident lasted only seconds, the “180-degree” turn it forced upon Zak’s soul is permanent. He knows he is at fault, but his choosing to ignore his fault till the end of the film cost him more than just his son’s life.
