Thrash has become one of Netflix’s top-performing releases since premiering on April 10, 2026, despite falling short with critics. While the movie isn’t exactly groundbreaking, it does a pretty great job of materializing the massive scale of the disaster at its core.

For a film that revolves around a Category 5 hurricane triggering devastating floods and shark-infested waters, the disaster flick relies heavily on practical effects, including harrowing stunts that see actors crashing through windows.

Of course, these scenes were shot in a tightly controlled environment with every safety measure in place, and the streamer has recently released a behind-the-scenes featurette that offers a thrilling glimpse into the relentless production.

This explains why the end product feels so visceral compared to other disaster flicks, and it’s easy to see why it’s topping the charts.

What is Netflix’s Thrash About?

Directed by Tommy Wirkola, the disaster thriller follows the residents of Annieville as they attempt to survive a Category 5 hurricane, whose flooding unleashes ravenous bull sharks. The narrative centers on an ensemble that includes a pregnant woman played by Phoebe Dynevor, a plucky teenager, and a marine biologist trying to rescue his niece.

Speaking of Wirkola’s approach to this movie, producer Kevin Messick shared (via Tudum by Netflix):

There was a lot of that crafty filmmaking that went into this that Tommy was perfect for. He’s cool, he’s got an anarchic, heavy metal kind of edge to him, and he’s funny. It’s the kind of filmmaking we love at Hyperobject.

He’s not wrong, as the filmmaking in this disaster thriller is indeed impressive. And it may lack the deliberate camp of the Sharknado series or the high-stakes tension of Jaws, the practical effects, combined with some great performances from the cast, could make for an entertaining experience if shark thrillers are your cup of tea.

Thrash Producers Address the Challenges Behind the Disaster Movie

Coming to the movie’s production, producers Adam McKay and Kevin Messick described the project as a significant challenge. However, the most complex aspect proved to be staging the flood-ravaged town under siege.

The town square seen in the movie was constructed inside a massive tank in a parking lot. And considering they were working within a modest budget, production designer David Ingram devised a plan to create the sets across three levels, which allowed them to simulate rising water not by increasing the water levels but by lowering the sets themselves (via Bloody Disgusting).

In that town square, the production designer built the sets like Legos in three levels, because you can’t keep raising the water, but you can lower the buildings. So the trick of what we did, as the floodwaters keep rising. The sets got shorter, if that makes sense. I thought it was genius when David Ingram, our production designer, came up with that plan, and it makes a lot of logical sense.

Although it’d be easy to write off this movie as another B-movie schlock, the passion and hard work behind the production are commendable.
