But a new report from Dating.com found that people are increasingly becoming more attracted to so-called nerds, proving that brains are outweighing beauty when it comes to searching for potential partners.

That’s not to say that nerds are less physically attractive; rather, simply put, it’s more about what’s going on the inside than outside that has women doing a double take.

“Nerdy became the new hot when people started placing more value on substance over surface. For a long time, confidence was associated with being outgoing, polished, and composed, but recently, people are beginning to see through all that and want something deeper,” Jaime Bronstein, resident therapist at Dating.com, told the Toronto Sun.

“Daters are beginning to find intelligence, passion, and curiosity as sexy, and these traits are often associated with being a ‘nerd.’”

She continued: “No one sees the nerd as socially awkward or weird anymore. Nerds are now seen as knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and comfortable being themselves. In dating, that kind of self-assurance can be refreshing in a world where everyone is trying to be someone else.

But there is a sexier dating archetype that is emerging: The older nerd.

New data from the dating site reveals that 71% of daters find nerds sexy.

It also found that Google searches for “I like older men” have surged by 105% in the past month, while “I want a nerd” is up 148%, showing a growing appetite for older, intellectual men who boast a mix of knowledge, experience, and emotional depth.

The Clark Kent type

Real substance, sure, but aesthetically, the classic “man in glasses” persona also has its appeal.

“Glasses used to be associated with a studious or introverted personality, but are now perceived as a marker of depth and thoughtfulness,” Bronstein noted. “Today, it’s more important to consider a person’s appearance over time rather than their immediate chemistry. Real connections need time and space to grow and mature.”

Ultimately, while it’s easy to associate age with experience, you can’t knock younger demographics who have been through it.

In fact, Bronstein equated experience with stability.

“People who grew up amid financial crises, political volatility, and burnout culture are now craving groundedness, competence, and emotional security,” she pointed out. “They’re exhausted from constant uncertainty and are longing for something steady and dependable.”

Confidence and consistency are key

She further explained: “That means the attraction is not limited to older intellectual types. Younger ‘nerdy’ people can be just as appealing when they show confidence in who they are, passion for their interests, and emotional consistency.”

So people aren’t just craving a more grounded, consistent, emotionally mature life but those qualities reign supreme in a relationship as well — and seeking someone with smarts heavily contributes to that.

Plus, something more enduring can develop into a deeper kind of attraction, particularly when someone is knowledgeable, ambitious, and has passions and interests in life.

“What many people find attractive today is someone who feels grounded and authentic. Traits that were once perceived as ‘cool’ or ‘mysterious’ can sometimes come across as performative, whereas someone who is genuinely passionate and engaged in what they love often appears secure, interesting, and dependable,” Bronstein said.

“‘Nerds’ are considered attractive now because traits like curiosity, authenticity, and depth signal the very qualities people are looking for in dating — commitment, self-assurance, independence from validation, and attention to detail,” she added.

“Those are the qualities people truly find sexy. That sense of depth and sincerity is where much of the attraction lies.”
