Following Season 1‘s huge success, many may be surprised to learn that the director improvised several scenes he doubted, which could have led to the anime’s downfall. In an interview, Takehiro Kubota revealed:

As a director, there is no end to the difficulties and hardships. I often felt stressed because I had to manage the staff, do quality control, and take on a wide range of other responsibilities.

Kubota also mentioned that since My Happy Marriage originated as a light novel, he felt motivated to bring some of its vision into the anime. He also added:

Since the original work is a novel (although there is also a manga adaptation), I was able to propose my own vision and incorporate various ideas into the anime. I was able to show off my own style in this anime, so I think that it was very rewarding. The genre and themes of My Happy Marriage
 were something I had not touched on much in previous productions, so I feel I have become more confident doing love stories like this one.

Interestingly, Kubota once revealed how Japanese traditions influenced the director to add tons of cherry blossom scenes in the anime that significantly enhanced the show’s aesthetic.

Cherry blossoms permeate Japanese art forms, appearing in paintings, woodblock prints, and even tattoos. In Japanese tradition, cherry blossoms (Sakura) symbolize hope, new beginnings, and even love. Kubota shared that he intended to add cherry blossoms to represent Miyo’s bond with Kiyoka Kudou and honor the memory of her late mother.
