Moana Live-Action Director Opens Up on Casting Dwayne Johnson as Maui

Disney’s live-action Moana has already sparked intense online chatter, and much of it centers around Dwayne Johnson’s return as Maui. Director Thomas Kail has now addressed both the excitement and the criticism, particularly the viral backlash surrounding Johnson’s wig and overall look in early footage. During an exclusive interview with Variety, Kail explained why Johnson remained the right choice to reprise Maui, and said:

Dwayne is Maui. He was always going to be the one. So that was definitely one of the very appealing parts of this package.

Thomas Kail didn’t shy away from addressing the elephant in the room: the internet’s fixation on Dwayne Johnson’s wig. Early reactions labeled the look as unnatural, with some fans comparing it unfavorably to the animated version. However, Kail clarified that translating Maui’s larger-than-life appearance into live-action required a careful blend of practical design and cinematic storytelling.

According to the director, the team prioritized cultural accuracy while still honoring the beloved animated aesthetic. Johnson’s physical transformation, including the wig and costume, was designed to reflect Maui’s mythological presence rather than aiming for strict realism. Kail said:

As the conversation unfolded on the original “Moana,” pre-2016 when the prospect of Maui, who was going to be played by Dwayne, was presented to the advisors on the film without hair, it was immediately flagged because Maui’s power and spirit comes from his hair. Maui without hair is not Maui. So we knew Maui had to have it.

It’s a different experience when you see it in a two-minute trailer. When folks have been watching the movie, you sort of say “there’s Maui,” and then you don’t think about it.

Beyond the controversy, it is crucial to understand why Johnson was essential to the film. As someone with Polynesian heritage and a strong emotional connection to Moana, Johnson brings authenticity that goes beyond appearance. His involvement helps ground the character in cultural respect while maintaining the charisma fans expect.
