Michael Fassbender Discussed the Difference Between Charles Xavier and Magneto in X-Men: First Class

At the same time, Fassbender was also asked about his co-star James McAvoy comparing Charles and Erik with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. In response, Fassbender stated that he agreed with the comparison, but also felt that the two characters were fundamentally different in another way.

I think that Charles is just horny, and just trying to get laid. Throughout the film. He’s like human beings are cool, give them a chance because he just wants to have human being s*x.

Fassbender made the above statement, adding that his character had the exact opposite approach to Charles Xavier when it came to his views on the conflict between mutants and human beings.

Fassbender’s comments hint at Xavier’s relationship with Moira MacTaggert, which leads to him developing a soft side for humans. In contrast, Magento is only focused on revenge, which eventually leads him to become pro-mutant and look down upon humans.

In the same interview, Fassbender was also asked about taking over the role of Magento from Sir Ian McKellen, who played the character in three X-Men films before him. Fassbender admitted to being a fan of McKellen’s performance in the franchise.

I watched and got a flavour and I liked very much what he did, but I decided to paint a new canvas.

Fassbender made the above statement, explaining although the fanbase loved McKellen’s performance, he decided not to base his portrayal on the legendary actor.

At the same time, McKellen admitted that director Matthew Vaughn wasn’t interested in him simply playing a younger version of McKellen’s character. Instead, Fassbender based his performance on the comic books that inspired the film and the script itself, which had portrayed Magento as a revenge-driven mutant.
