Measles outbreak: Third measles case reported in Quebec

2 weeks ago 350

Public health authorities have reported a third measles case Wednesday in Quebec, just over a week after declaring that the province had been struck with another outbreak of the highly contagious disease.

This latest outbreak followed a previous declaration that an earlier outbreak had ended in February.

Quebec’s Health Ministry maintains a list of possible sites of exposure to measles and tells people considered “not protected against measles” to self-isolate from the fifth day of exposure to measles until the 14th day.

Recent exposures were recorded on a March 24 Royal Air Maroc flight from Casablanca and on the same day at Montreal-Trudeau Airport.

Some people who have had measles, people who were born before 1970, who received one vaccination dose if born before 1979 or who received two doses if born after 1979 are considered protected from the virus.

Canada lost its measles-free status last November — more than 25 years after eradicating the virus — following a year of sustained measles transmission.
