Spoiler Alert !!!
The following contains spoilers for Marshals Season 2, Episode 4.
Marshals Season 2, Episode 4, Blast Radius, shifts the focus to unfinished business from the team’s past, bringing back a dangerous fugitive whose escape still weighs on Cal (Logan Marshall-Green). Meanwhile, Belle (Arielle Kebbel) faces trouble outside work, Miles (Tatanka Means) struggles to keep a secret, and Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) finds herself facing a possible leadership role. With an old adversary back on the radar, the Marshals have more than one problem to solve.
Rudy Carpenter Returns to Haunt Cal in Marshals
Credit: CBSBlast Radius opens with Kayce dreaming about the painful branding he endured as a younger man. Unable to sleep, he teams up with Andrea for a night of warrant service and fugitive arrests. Their teamwork offers a welcome glimpse of their growing professional connection, although the episode soon turns its attention to other members of the team.
Belle discovers that her car window has been smashed, and a man warns her that she has 48 hours to repay her casino debt, including interest. At the same time, Miles continues hiding Cal’s cancer diagnosis from Maddie (Morgan Lindholm), despite feeling increasingly uncomfortable about keeping her in the dark. Cal, meanwhile, has informed Chief Deputy Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen), who is already considering who might take over when Cal goes on medical leave.
That discussion becomes more complicated when the team learns that Rudy Carpenter (Braxton Hale), a fugitive and bomb-maker who escaped Cal and Kayce in Season 1, may be back in Montana. His return forces Cal to confront a failure he has struggled to leave behind. Kayce and Belle visit Rudy’s ex-wife, Audrey (Nicole Zyana), hoping she can help them locate him. She warns them that Rudy will do anything to avoid returning to prison and always has an escape plan.
The team later recovers a discarded bag containing a broken shotgun linked to Rudy. The discovery confirms they are pursuing the right man, but finding him proves much harder. Their investigation eventually points toward a local gang called the Disciples, whose members may be helping Rudy in exchange for his expertise.
Can Andrea Step Up as Cal Faces Cancer?
Credit: CBSWhile the fugitive investigation gathers momentum, Cal’s health creates uncertainty about the team’s future. Gifford believes Andrea could be a suitable replacement during Cal’s medical leave, but she is reluctant to take charge. Kayce, however, believes she has the ability to lead. Andrea’s own struggles complicate the situation. Her PTSD worsens, and she begins seeing members of the Clegg family who are not actually present. Although she remains committed to the investigation, her distress raises questions about how much responsibility she can take on while dealing with her trauma.
The team’s pursuit of Rudy also puts pressure on Cal, who is determined to correct his earlier mistake. After questioning members of the Disciples, the Marshals learn that Rudy has access to explosives. The discovery becomes even more alarming when they find that eight barrels of industrial explosives have been stolen, enough to destroy an entire city block.
Cal and Kayce disagree with Gifford’s handling of the investigation, while the chief deputy worries about the consequences if the operation escalates. Cal’s cancer diagnosis adds another layer of uncertainty, particularly as he tries to remain in the field and prove that he is still capable of doing the job.
Marshals Season 2 Episode 4 Ends on a Deadly Cliffhanger
Credit: CBSThe team eventually gets a break when Cal spots evidence of an explosion in security footage. Recognizing it as a likely bomb-testing site, he directs the Marshals toward an old farm outside Bozeman. At the property, the team finds Rudy preparing to leave in his van. When the Marshals confront him, he opens fire and is wounded during the exchange before escaping into a barn. Kayce and Andrea follow him inside, hoping to confirm his condition and bring the pursuit to an end.
Rudy, however, has one last move. He activates a bomb, forcing Kayce to pull Andrea away just before the device explodes. The episode ends with both Marshals caught in the blast, leaving their immediate fate unresolved. The closing moments turn the investigation into a personal crisis for the team. Rudy’s return has already reopened Cal’s old wound, and his final act leaves Kayce and Andrea’s futures uncertain. No confirmed deaths are revealed before the credits roll, so viewers will have to wait for the next episode to learn whether the two Marshals survive.
The episode works best when it connects the case to the characters’ unresolved problems, though the decision to send the team into such a dangerous situation without a clearer on-screen backup plan feels questionable. Still, ending on an unanswered question gives the two-part story a strong reason to continue. Will Kayce and Andrea make it out alive, and has Rudy’s plan been stopped for good?
