The hiring of a Toronto tandem of Mats Sundin and John Chayka, reported the past few days, is expected to be confirmed at a news conference as early as Monday, as reported by Postmedia’s Steve Simmons in his weekly newsletter. Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks have moved to the interview stage that includes at least one former Leaf.

After weeks of looking for Brad Treliving’s replacement, including a search firm’s input, face-to-face and zoom interviews and seeking permission to talk to others under contract, Toronto is close to settling on franchise scoring leader Sundin’s improbable return with no formal front office training.

Sundin would have a yet-to-be-determined supervisory role in many areas, while Chayka, the 36-year-old former general manager of the Arizona Coyotes who left under a cloud, would be the data-centric GM for which MLSE CEO Keith Pelley advertised.

On Tuesday night, whoever is in charge in Toronto will learn the team’s fate in the draft lottery, whether it moves up from fifth, stays put or drops out and loses its first-round pick to Boston.

In Vancouver, the Province reports Toronto’s current special advisor, Shane Doan, is believed to be among a small group proceeding to a second round of general manager interviews with two assistant GMs, Boston’s Evan Gold and the Canucks’ own Ryan Johnson.

Former Leaf Kevyn Adams could be in the mix, too, ousted in Buffalo just before many of his moves paid off getting the Sabres into the playoffs and past Boston in the first round.
