A 22-year-old man has been charged in relation to an attempted abduction of a child from a driveway in Surrey last weekend, said police.

Officers were called to a home in the 8100-block 136A Street at around 6:40 p.m. Saturday after a report of an attempted abduction.

Police said a child was playing in a driveway outside when a stranger allegedly approached the child and “physically picked up” the child. Bystanders saw the incident and intervened. The stranger then put the child down and left the area.

“A man matching the description of the suspect was detained by bystanders a short distance away until police arrived and took him into custody,” said the Surrey Police Service in a news release on Wednesday.

The child was not harmed.

Liam Robert Dobbs-Morency is facing one count of abduction of a person under 14 and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon.

He remains in custody pending a bail hearing Thursday in Surrey provincial court.
