Man arrested in Edmonton returned to Ontario to face extortion, murder charges

The accused faces the charges in connection with two violent incidents in Brampton in April and May

Peel Regional Police have laid extortion and murder charges against a 22-year-old man, the latest linked to their Extortion Task Force targeting an organized crime group known as For Brothers, announced in May.

Safaldeep Singh face charges of extortion and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with two violent incidents in Brampton after he was pulled over by Edmonton police on June 23 during a traffic stop.

“We’ve been investigating extortion networks and their multi-jurisdictional linkages in Canada for some time now, and we have established a coordinated approach with a focus on effective intelligence collection, sharing, and enforcement action across provinces. In this investigation, we’re especially grateful to Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Peel Regional Police for their close collaboration, which led to Singh’s arrest and the connection to violent occurrences on the other side of the country,” Staff-Sgt. Eric Stewart, of the Edmonton Police Service’s Investigations Branch, said in a statement.

Peel cops say on April 21, at approximately 2:50 a.m., a business in Brampton was targeted in a shooting and the suspect fled the scene in a silver Honda Civic.

Investigators subsequently recovered 14 shell casings at the scene.

Police say on May 6, at approximately, 8 p.m., a man was exiting his residence when he was approached by an unknown individual who allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim; however, the weapon malfunctioned.

The victim was able to escape without injury and the suspect was last seen fleeing in a grey Acura Integra.

During Singh’s initial arrest, a quantity of drugs and a loaded illegal firearm were allegedly found. He was charged with firearms and drug-related offences.

Singh returned to Ontario on June 26

In collaboration with Peel Regional Police, arrangements were made for his return to Ontario on June 26, where he faces the more serious offences.

“Organized crime operates without regard for jurisdictional boundaries, and our response must be the same,” Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said in a statement.

“Extortion has a serious impact on victims and communities, and we are committed to addressing this harm through targeted enforcement and strong partnerships across the country. We are sending a clear message that those who threaten the safety of our communities will be pursued and brought to justice. We extend our appreciation to the Edmonton Police Service for their assistance in this investigation.”

Singh was denied bail and has been remanded into custody.

On May 25, Peel Regional Police announced the takedown and arrest of individuals allegedly connected to For Brothers where victims in the South Asian community were allegedly told to fork over cash payments or their homes or businesses would be shot up or burned down.

Police made 17 arrests of men, all originally from India, totalling 106 criminal charges over 24 incidents.

Of those, 16 “are linked to For Brothers, including arson and multiple shootings that involved 324 rounds discharged.”
