Lily-Rose Depp has proven her excellence across numerous genres and projects, and some of her pieces continue to stick with her name and reputation like glue. One of these very projects is her series with The Weeknd The Idol, which was received with such criticism that it nearly ended her career, with it being canceled after only one season.
However, her recognition through the same isn’t the only thing that continues to keep Depp linked to her role. Rather, the actress feels that a trace of her performance as Jocelyn in the said series seems to be felt in her recently released gothic thriller Nosferatu as well, with her even claiming that the film isn’t very different from the series either.
Lily-Rose Depp talks about the connection between The Idol and Nosferatu
Lily-Rose Depp is currently raging on the big screens through her recently released horror-drama Nosferatu. A gothic horror remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name, this one features her as Ellen Hutter, the new bride of Thomas Hutter, who is plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread thanks to the vampire Count Orlok’s obsession with her.
Of course, this film might as well be deemed the polar opposite of her critically panned series The Idol. This show featured her as the aspiring model Jocelyn, who resumes her journey to become the greatest pop star in the USA after a nervous breakdown before meeting Tedros, a contemporary cult’s head, leading to a complicated work and personal relationship.
And yet, Depp feels “there’s a real through line” between the two. During a recent interview with IndieWire, she expressed the same, saying,
Continuing, she explained that it was the very specific and demanding aspects of the series and the film that further caught her attention enough for her to take on the roles. “There is a through-line there to me in that they’re both very specific, demanding roles and clearly, that’s something that I’m interested in exploring,” admitted The King actress.
Additionally, she pointed out that, since she started working on this flick soon after she was done working on the series, it also had her bringing over the physicality of Jocelyn to Ellen. She said:
That said, Depp concluded by saying, “I definitely brought that with me, even though, you know, it’s a very different style of filmmaking. It’s very different in a lot of ways, but I did feel those similarities.” Similarly, despite being very different projects, the show also prepared her for the physicality and vocal elements of simulated s-x in the movie.
Lily-Rose Depp feels The Idol helped her prepare for Nosferatu
During the same interview, Depp also talked about how her performance as Jocelyn further helped her prepare for her role as Ellen. As she admitted herself: “I definitely feel like the physical work that I did on ‘The Idol,’ and the emotional work as well, definitely played a part in preparing me for this, because it just taught me so much.”
Taking a closer look at both the characters, while they do have problems of their own, they are indeed as specific and demanding roles as the actress said them to be. Thus, taking over the physical and emotional elements of Jocelyn to Ellen really helped her bring her performance as the new bride of Hutter to perfection in the critically acclaimed gothic thriller masterpiece.
At the same time, she also emphasized how much her series with The Weeknd helped her grow, saying:
All of this being said, it’s inevitable that even though the series – with all its criticism and controversy which even led to its cancelation (via ET) – nearly ended her career, Lily-Rose Depp still holds it as a dear experience to her — one that is helping her shape her other characters as well.
The Idol can currently be streamed on HBO while Nosferatu is out in theatres now.
