NO ELECTION, NO RECOGNITION
Re “Weasel words led to Canada’s recognition of Palestine” (Lorrie Goldstein, Oct. 14): Although Canada has so far expressed only “deep regret” at the delay in Palestinian elections until Sept. 11, 2027, it is still not too late to withdraw recognition if elections are not held this year. However, we should withhold withdrawing recognition until there is no possibility of holding elections this year. Enforcing the original conditions on recognition would make Mr. Carney’s words more believable and effective in the future. If Hamas does not disarm, we should offer recognition only to the West Bank and not to Gaza. Of course, the Palestinians would be free to reject such partial recognition, but that would be their choice. We should continue to offer significant humanitarian aid to Palestine regardless of whether they hold elections this year.

(These actions would be a reasonable approach to a faulty idea)

A CANADIAN ACT
Canada deserves respect, not insults, threats, or suggestions that our provinces should separate from our country. We are a sovereign nation with our own identity, values, democratic institutions, and the right to determine our own future. If American officials genuinely believe that Canada is so insignificant, then they should not be surprised when Canadians reconsider where they travel, what products they purchase, and with whom they choose to do business. Trade is a two-way street.

(That’s exactly how Canadians are acting – proudly and independently. But it still doesn’t make the reality of 74% of our trade with the U.S. go away)

OUT OF THE DARK
What is taking so long for the Senate in Washington to make daylight time permanent all over? Daylight time is better, as the sun comes up at 4 a.m. on June 21 on standard time when everyone is sleeping. You have darker mornings in the winter but are not totally dark around 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 21 on daylight time. No reason why everyone should not be on daylight time.
