Tite Kubo is not just an awesome Shonen author, he also knows how to place comic moments in Bleach. Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War has been on a roll with its beautiful animation, original scenes and proper manga to anime adaptation. But no one could have seen a Black Clover reference coming.
Even more surprising is the fact that the gag moment came from Kenpachi Zaraki, the 11th Division captain who is known for his brutal tendencies and straightforward nature. The funny moment suits him even more since he is stating absolute facts, but is suddenly similar to another popular captain in Black Clover, Yami Sukehiro.
The running gag in Black Clover that is now in Bleach
Black Clover‘s Yami is the eccentric captain of the Black Bulls squad. He is known for his reckless and uncouth behavior along with frequent death threat deliveries. He is also an extremely powerful character, being the captain to one of the most elite magic knight squads. But if there’s one more thing the character is known for, is his love for poopy time.
Yami being in the washroom is a running gag in Black Clover. In fact, he rarely ever gets to be there in peace. Either he faces a lack of toilet paper, is interrupted by Magna or Asta, or his washroom walls are destroyed by a blast. The poor man hardly ever gets to poop in peace.
Fans absolutely love the way Yami is never at peace during his most precious time. In one instance, both Magna and Asta open the doors to his stall, to which Yami responds that they are dead. This running gag in the anime and manga has become a Black Clover staple.
Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War might have referenced Yami’s washroom gag
In episode 399 of Bleach titled, Gate of the Sun, Mayuri passes through the game on the city of Vier Ast. Just when he gleefully states that it’s easy to get away from everyone by reopening the gate, he is shocked by the emergence of Kenpachi Zaraki. When a wide-eyed Mayuri asks Zaraki how he even got there, he casually replies that he was in the washroom when everyone forgot him there. The next scene shows that he has walked upon Mayuri and Nemu while they were reopening the gate and simply followed them.
Fans have always loved Zaraki for his unique nature and unimaginable strength, but the scene reminded them about Yami from Black Clover. Yami often gets unnecessarily involved in serious matters during his washroom time. This time, the same happened to Zaraki.
The gag may or may not be a reference to Black Clover‘s Yami. But what’s important is that fans were able to relate both the scenes in the respective series due to their similar hilarious natures. It might not be a reference, but the gag is still well timed and thus well-received by the audience.
Black Clover anime is available to watch on Crunchyroll and Bleach: TYBW is streaming on Disney+.
