Kristen Stewart Is Living Proof That Angelina Jolie Shouldn’t Give Up on Her Oscar Dream Yet for ‘Maria’ After Losing the Golden Globe

Kristen Stewart’s 2022 Oscar nomination provides hope for Angelina Jolie’s Academy Awards dream even after losing the Golden Globe award. Jolie made her Hollywood comeback after a long break with Pablo Larraín’s Maria in 2024.

Jolie’s masterful performance in the Netflix movie has managed to capture the audience’s heart since its release. As a result, it did not come as a surprise when the actress was nominated for the Golden Globes in the best actress category. However, her loss inevitably disappointed her fans.

What made it worse was their belief that Jolie’s Golden Globes defeat would directly translate into her not getting an Oscar nomination this year. Fortunately, Kristen Stewart’s track record for Pablo Larraín’s previous biographical movie might prove otherwise.

As mentioned above, Angelina Jolie‘s much anticipated Hollywood return happened with Maria. Jolie plays the role of the acclaimed opera singer in Pablo Larraín’s movie. Her comeback performance has been the talk of the industry, with continuous praise from critics and fans. In fact, many seem to believe that Jolie portrayed the best of her acting skills in the movie.

Which, according to them, far surpasses even her supporting actress Oscar-winning performance in Girl, Interrupted. However, the much-coveted Best Actress Academy Award is yet to be bagged by the Maleficent star. Her 2025 Golden Globe award nomination gave hope to fans that this might be the year when Angelina Jolie will emerge victorious in that race.

However, her defeat to Fernanda Torres did not shock the fans, although it was disappointing all the same. The main reason behind their worry has been that she was snubbed by BAFTA and SAG. That, paired with the Golden Globe defeat has made her chances for an Oscar nomination slimmer.

Incidentally, the one providing hope for her fans in this situation is the leading lady of the second installment of Pablo Larraín‘s 20th century women-centric biographical anthology, aka, Kristen Stewart. Stewart starred in Larraín’s 2021 movie Spencer, which depicted the life of Princess Diana during a tumultuous time in her life.

Similar to Jolie, she was also snubbed by both SAG and BAFTA and lost her Golden Globe award. However, her masterful performance still won an Oscar nomination. This has made fans hopeful that Jolie might still make it to the list when the nominations list is released later this month.

Although Kristen Stewart‘s example has brought relief to many Angelina Jolie fans, some still feel unsure about it. One of the main argument they present in support of that is the fact that although Stewart was snubbed by BAFTA for the main nominations, she made the longlist.

Something, Jolie has not managed to do. Moreover, they also point out the fact that Stewart’s performance evoked significant “passion” by critics and the audience alike, which could be due to her playing a much more influential public figure.

Whereas, the mentioned groups seem less enthused about Angelina Jolie’s performance. As a result, although they are awed by the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider star’s performance, they do not believe she would actually make the nominations.

Kristen was at the BAFTA longlist and won the most precursors awards; Angelina won nothing and missed the BAFTA longlist… So, not happening.

Stewart was longlisted at BAFTA and was a critical darling, also Diana is a much more ubiquitous figure than Maria Callas
I think Jolie is cooked, she was supposed to have a comeback, Torres has Golden Globe and Baptiste has the trifecta, they're much more likely

Yes but the nominations are pretty tight. Like the locked in nominations for sure would be Moore and Torres. The thing is I don't think that they would cut out Madison, Gascón or Erivo. :/

It is still hard to say how the final nomination list will turn out as the competition seems extremely tight this year. As many have pointed out, Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres’ Golden Globe wins has pretty much paved their path for a smooth ride to the Academy Awards.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if Angelina Jolie ends up winning a nomination in the end, or if her comeback performance gets overshadowed by the other powerhouse veterans.
