Spoiler Alert !!!

This article contains some spoilers from Kill Blue Episode 1.

I did not expect a hitman getting turned into a middle schooler to hit me this hard, but the Kill Blue Episode 1 managed to deliver on that premise. What started as a cold-blooded action anime quickly turned into something way more personal, and honestly, I was not expecting that.

One minute, I am watching a legendary assassin casually wipe out enemies, and the next, I am watching the same guy get emotional over math class. Yeah, this premiere was wild as it sounds, so let us explore in detail.

Kill Blue Episode 1 Starts Like John Wick Then Completely Flips It

The episode wastes no time introducing Juzo Ogami as an absolute cool hitman. The opening mission was clean, brutal and honestly kind of satisfying to watch. The guy was dodging bullets with a newspaper, taking down armed men like it was nothing. You can see right from the beginning that everyone is afraid of him.

What I did like about how the show handled this, though, is that they do not try to glamorize his life too much. Right away, you get the impression that he feels exhausted with his work. When he gets back home and we see hints of his past – his ex-wife, his daughter – you can already tell there is something missing in his life.

Then comes the actual surprise. The wasp sting scene was so random that I genuinely thought it was just a throwaway moment. But nope, that was the event that changed everything, and before Juzo can even process what happened, his boss delivers a new mission: infiltrate a middle school in that body. Next thing we see is Juzo waking up as 12 years old. I love how this scene was portrayed so casually. They do not make a scene with a lot of overacting and screaming.

Episode 1’s School Life Is Where It Gets Surprisingly Good

Now here is where I thought the anime would just go full comedy – however, it actually does better than that! Watching Juzo go through the normal middle school life was hilariously awkward. His self-introduction? Absolute disaster. Bro really said his hobby is sniping. Yeah, right! Then he tries to manage the situation by saying he actually means airsoft guns and fake guns and that scene genuinely made me laugh.

But I have to admit I started enjoying the quieter moments as well – there was this entire sequence where Juzo was just sitting in class, learning basic math, and he was completely blown away by it, that scene really stuck with me.

And just when the episode settles into this wholesome school vibe, it throws in the most ridiculous situation – a half-naked dude in a panda mask causing chaos at school. Yeah, this anime does not hold back. At first, I thought Juzo would just ignore it. Even Kotatsu basically tells him he does not need to get involved. But then the moment shifts. Juzo sees girls his daughter’s age in danger – and that was it. No hesitation.

This is where the show really got me. Even after everything, Juzo still has that sense of responsibility. He is not just a hitman – he is a father. And that part of him has not disappeared. The fight itself is actually pretty interesting because he is not as strong as before. You can feel that limitation. He still wins, of course, but it was not effortless anymore. And I like that about the Kill Blue anime – it keeps things grounded.

After that, the small social moments hit harder than the action. The same classmates who thought he was weird now invite him into their group chat. It was such a normal thing, but for Juzo, it was huge. And the ending of the Kill Blue episode 1? That quiet reflection where he realizes this school life feels more fulfilling than his old job – yeah, I was not expecting to feel that.

Kill Blue Episode 1 Balances Chaos, Comedy and Heart Perfectly

Overall, Kill Blue Episode 1 was way more than just a crazy premise. It was funny, chaotic, and surprisingly heartfelt all at once. I expected a goofy hitman comedy and got instead the story of a man who accidentally got another chance at life and actually started to enjoy it.

Now, if the series continues to keep this same balance throughout the rest of the episodes, then it will likely end up being one of the most unexpectedly good anime of the season.

Kill Blue is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
