After a lot of uncertainty about Tom Holland’s next Spider-Man film, the actor finally confirmed that “It’s happening” when he went on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Since then, fans have been ecstatic to see what Marvel Studios has in store for us and if it will be another multiverse flick or tone it down to street level. While nothing is confirmed yet, reports and speculations continue to fly around, taking our excitement to whole new levels each time.
This time, a well-known industry insider with a pretty good track record has reported something about Spider-Man 4’s script and we are in quite a bit of a shock. As it turns out, the OG version was going to bring back two villains from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spider-Man 4’s original script brought back 2 Homecoming villains
The biggest adversary to our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man was none other than Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes aka the iconic Vulture. However, sorry Keaton fans, he is not the villain that was all set to face off with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker again.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman’s Patreon post, the script is still going through a rewriting. He said, “They are still rewriting the script. The original version before they scrapped it had Scorpion and Shocker.” Does that ring a bell?
Scorpion and Shocker showed up in Spider-Man: Homecoming and while they had much smaller roles, the potential to bring them back was huge. Shocker/Herman Schultz, played by Bokeem Woodbine, was one of Adrian Toomes’ associates selling weapons to a local criminal.
While Herman was not Shocker at first, Adrian accidentally kills the original owner of the title and then passes the mantle to him.
Coming to Scorpion/Mac Gargan, the villain was played by Michael Mando. He was Adrian’s new buyer but the deal went sideways when Peter ambushed them, resulting in Mac’s imprisonment.
In the mid-credits scene, Adrian and Mac have a reunion in prison and the latter was convinced that the former knows the identity of Spider-Man. Needless to say, there was a good chance the villain would return to the scene to take his revenge on Peter.
However, if what Richtman has said is true, who knows if Kevin Feige will let either Shocker or Scorpion make their way back to the MCU. His report did not indicate what villains could take their place in the rewritten script.
The original script lit a fire within Tom Holland
After you have done several movies playing the same character, there is a chance that the spark will eventually die. Fortunately for Holland, the flame is still burning and how.
Holland once talked to the Critics Choice Association (via Variety) about returning to play Peter Parker and stated that he wouldn’t “make another one for the sake of making another one.” Rather, “it will have to be worth the while of the character.”
Then came the script of Spider-Man 4. During his appearance on The Rich Roll Podcast, Holland revealed that he had read a draft with Zendaya and while it needs some work, it “lit a fire” in him.
In his words,
Well, unfortunately for Holland, the draft that lit a flame in him is apparently gone. Only time will tell if the rewritten piece has the same effect on him or not.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is available to watch on Disney+.
