Josh Hartnett was briefly hospitalized after a late-night car crash involving a Canadian police vehicle, sending tremors through the set of his upcoming Netflix series filming in Newfoundland. The 47-year-old Oppenheimer and Trap actor was riding in an SUV around 1 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, when it reportedly collided with a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) patrol vehicle at the intersection of New Cove Road and Elizabeth Avenue in St. John’s. We learned this from CBC News.

A 59-year-old man was driving the SUV, which sustained “significant damage”, per the RNC. Hartnett was promptly checked into a local hospital with his rep confirming to PEOPLE that he was “cleared to return to work”.

The officer involved was also taken to the hospital as a precaution, and authorities are now calling on witnesses or anyone with footage from the area to come forward as the investigation continues. Just months earlier, Hartnett opened up about doing his own stunts in the adrenaline-charged Fight or Flight: “I was bruised from head to toe. Yeah, head to toe,” he told PEOPLE.

The actor has had a packed 2024, from filming Verity with Anne Hathaway to welcoming his fourth child with wife Tamsin Egerton.

Both vehicles were significantly damaged in the Sept. 25 incident, and three people, including Josh Hartnett, the SUV driver, and the officer, were taken to the hospital. While the 47-year-old actor was treated for minor injuries and cleared soon after, the crash did briefly halt production.

The RNC issued a statement seeking any video or eyewitness accounts to aid in the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, Hartnett’s representative, Susan Patricola, told USA TODAY on Sept. 29 that the actor was “looked at and then released back to work.”

The collision occurred while Hartnett was filming scenes for a new Netflix thriller, created by Jesse McKeown (The Umbrella Academy, 19-2), which began production in August. The project is filming entirely in Newfoundland.

Hartnett, who also appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap, has long proven he’s more than just a heartthrob; he’s a risk-taker, physically and creatively. And this latest scare hasn’t slowed him down.
