When you aren’t the priority of your parents, you don’t know how to be a priority to yourself. I had parents who were addicted to drugs.
Raised in a chaotic environment, her childhood was shaped by instability. With a high-functioning heroin addict for a mother and a sometimes violent father, she struggled to find a sense of self-worth. Financial freedom became her goal, leading her to make dangerous choices. Recalling how the allure of affluence from drug dealers seemed like the only route to success, she asserted:
Not having a healthy foundation, as I would come to find out way into my adulthood, had some really strong effects in regard to how I saw myself. I knew that anything that I needed was something I needed to provide for… I decided to sell drugs.
Growing up, the drug dealers were the ones that had affluence. That’s what we readily saw as success. And so for me, considering my circumstances at the time, my mother was not doing well. She was a high-functioning heroin addict. We didn’t have the things that we should have. The home we lived in was not taken care of.
Jada’s story didn’t stop there. While navigating this double life, she worked legitimate jobs from the age of 12, including stints at The Gap and as a telemarketer. She longed for independence, fearing for her mother’s safety in a world ravaged by drugs. “What if something happens to my mother?” she pondered, motivating her to seek survival in the harshest of ways.
In a candid discussion with PEOPLE, Jada Smith also reflected on the infamous Oscars slap, initially believing it to be a skit until reality set in. Her memoir, releasing on October 17, promises to delve deeper into her journey, showcasing a multifaceted life filled with struggles and triumphs.
