After making a significant amount of headlines with her appearance as a s*x worker in Sean Baker’s Anora, Mikey Madison is currently witnessing the Oscar buzz, now that the award season is gradually approaching. But surprisingly, while any actor would be flattered by the response, Madison noted that it was her brother’s reaction that mattered the most.
While Mikey Madison is undoubtedly garnering attention surrounding her partially raunchy and partially eyebrow-raising s*x scenes in Anora, the actress admitted to being concerned about her family’s reaction. Most importantly it was her twin brother Miles’ response that she was worried about. But in the end, her anxiety was relieved following her brother’s heartwarming feedback.
Mikey Madison’s twin brother eased her concerns surrounding Anora
Appearing in raunchy scenes and portraying s*x workers is not everybody’s cup of tea. Even the most seasoned actors often fumble before signing on such projects, as it often holds the possibility of being typecast in such wild roles. But surprisingly, when it came to the rising star Mikey Madison, the actress embraced the challenge of portraying the harsh realities of s*x work in Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed film, Anora.
Now, after delivering a riveting performance as the lead star of the movie, Mikey Madison is making headlines and witnessing the Oscar buzz. But meanwhile, claiming to be flattered by the audience and critics’ response to her portrayal, the actress told USA Today, whose reaction she was worried about the most. Apparently, Madison claimed to feel anxious about her family, especially her twin brother Miles’ reaction.
I was nervous about my family seeing it because you want them to like your work. My twin is my closest friend, so I was able to ask him, ‘Did you like it? Do you think I’m a good actor?’
It’s embarrassing to even admit that, but he was speechless when he saw it for the first time. He was like, ‘Mikey, I didn’t see you at all; I just saw the character.’ Coming from him, that was really special to hear.
Despite being concerned about her family’s reaction, Mikey Madison’s anxiety was put to ease by her twin brother Miles. Although the actress mentioned how her brother was initially taken aback by her raunchy scenes, Madison later noted that Miles not only praised her performance but also boosted her self-confidence and her ability to take on such challenging roles in the near future.
Sean Baker reflected on Mikey Madison’s casting and work ethics
Meanwhile, after Mikey Madison reflected on her role in Anora, it was the filmmaker Sean Baker who offered his opinion on the actress’ performance to USA Today. Beginning with her casting, Baker mentioned that it was her maniacal performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood that led him to write the character of Ani specifically for Madison.
Later on, reflecting on her portrayal of a comically unhinged film buff in the meta-slasher franchise, Scream, Sean Baker admitted to being surprised by Mikey Madison’s soft-spoken nature, in real life. Therefore, reflecting on her work ethic, Baker noted how he had expected Madison to have a wild side, but instead soft and sweet.
I thought she might have a wild side to her, but she doesn’t. It was nice to see she definitely wasn’t typecast for those roles. That gave me confidence of like, ‘Oh, wow, she’s an actor.’
While Sean Baker claimed to be surprised by Mikey Madison’s real-life nature, he also admitted to being relieved to see that the actress wasn’t typecast in Anora. Instead, she took on the challenge of delving into the physically and mentally demanding role and doing what’s needed to make it look authentic and convincing.
Anora is currently available to watch on Prime Video.
