Invincible does a lot of things that are largely absent from conventional superhero comics. While superhero universes often work day and night to preserve the status quo, Invincible likes to upend it as storylines close out. Another thing that the series does well is character deaths. Omni-Man has arguably one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the comics, and it is exactly how fans of the show would imagine it.
Omni-Man dies at the hands of Thragg, as the former Grand Regent’s Viltrumites clash with Coalition forces. While Omni-Man does not die in the battle, he is mortally wounded and lives to see Mark defeat Thragg, with the aid of his friends and enemies. However, after Invincible is healed, he learns that his father is too wounded. While the duo has one final conversation, the death still hits Mark out of nowhere, given that Omni-Man passes out while Mark is speaking with him, but not really facing him.

Mark meets his father on his deathbed, given that Thragg had managed to severely damage Nolan’s heart. Omni-Man realized that his end was near and bequeathed to Mark the throne of the Viltrum Empire, which he came into after it was discovered that Mark and Nolan were the heirs of Argall.
Omni-Man would work with Robot on Earth to defend the planet, while Mark, Eve, and their child would settle on Telescria, with the help of Allen. However, the final conflict would take place in Earth’s upper atmosphere, as Viltrumites and the Coalition forces band together to fight and defeat Thragg.
The fight itself brilliantly reinforces what Invincible has been all about, juxtaposing Thragg’s loss due to a lack of friends with Mark’s victory, thanks to even his enemies putting their lives on the line for him. However, none of this was enough to save Nolan from certain death, given that no amount of prodigies can fix a Viltrumite heart. Nolan dies as Mark is trying to make an argument against taking the Viltrumite Throne, only to turn back to his father to realize that he had already passed.
Invincible Lives Up to the Promise He Made to His Father

In the upcoming season of Invincible, Mark is going to undergo a major shift in his ideology about being a superhero. After meeting Dinosaurus, who is going to serve as the chief antagonist of Season 5, Mark is going to have a different perspective about how superheroes should operate. Breaking away from day-to-day issues, Mark would focus on solving systemic problems across the universe, with man-made and natural orders alike.
Through the trials and tribulations that come after this fact, Mark is going to have a different perspective on what his Empire can actually do, which would be the blossoming of seeds that fans are going to see put in the next season. Mark uses a lot of strategies and tactics that he will pick up over the next few seasons to ‘fix’ the galaxy, very much in the way that Reed Richards tries to- through scientific solutions, diplomacy, and force, when required, so much so that the character even butts heads with the Coalition of Planets, because the Viltrumites have fixed so much, that the planets feel that the Coalition is actually a drain on its resources more than anything else.
Potential Timeline of Omni-Man’s Death in the Show- Explained
Omni-Man, teaching Mark, in Invincible Season 1, Episode 1 || Credit: Prime VideoFans of Nolan Grayson can breathe a sigh of relief. Nolan is not going to die next season. Nor is he going to die the season after. The only concrete place where Nolan can die in the story is in the penultimate or the final episode of the series.
Before Nolan’s death comes about, the character has a lot of story beats left to cover. Invincible will see the character not only take his throne as ruler of the remnants of the Viltrumite Empire, but also reconcile with Debbie. The latter is easier said than done, especially in the show, where the fallout between Debbie and Nolan has been more emotionally complex.
Debbie survives her husband and stays behind on Earth to take care of Anissa’s son, who is Mark’s child. These events are likely going to be part of the tail end of Season 9, which Kirkman believes is how long Invincible will last. He confirmed it at the San Diego Comic-Con 2025 (via IGN). Nolan’s death is likely going to be one of the final major events of the story. Next, the epilogue will likely cover what Mark accomplished during his time as emperor.
By the time the story ends, Mark will have been the Emperor for at least five hundred years, thinking about what his father told him when they fought during the Season 1 finale. Turns out, he would have quite a lot: a daughter, a son, an immortal wife, a universe at peace, and a world where Viltrumites are celebrated as a force for good. Not to mention, Mark is likely the strongest person in the Universe, with his wife a close second.
There is always a possibility that more is revealed about Nolan before he dies, as the comic author and series creator Robert Kirkman has been adding new lore to the show. Most notably, Nolan has been shown to have a father who is not Argall. Perhaps this will be retconned in the future, or some more context added to the story. This will likely not avert Nolan’s death, though it might change the circumstances of it.
