Lithium is one of the most important mid-to-late game resources in Subnautica 2. It will not be the most urgent material to gather at the start, but it quickly becomes essential for crafting powerful upgrades like Plasteel Ingots and improved oxygen tanks, to make your journey under the water easier.
However, the catch is that the Lithium is usually locked behind dangerous biomes, meaning you won’t reliably gather it in the early game without risk. Still, knowing where to find it ahead of time gives you a major advantage and helps you plan your exploration much more efficiently in Subnautica 2.

One of the best early-game sources of Lithium is the Great Jaw, a massive clam-like structure located about 350 meters from your Lifepod in a south-southwest direction.
This area is essentially a hidden resource hub, containing dense clusters of Lithium inside a central pod. Once you swim inside, you’ll notice glowing pink, strand-like “tripwires” surrounding the chamber, which can trigger the Great Jaw to close and emit deadly acid if disturbed.
Inside, multiple Lithium deposits are scattered around the inner walls and floor, making it one of the most efficient early farming locations in the game. These deposits can also replenish over time, meaning you can return later for more resources.
Outside of the Great Jaw, Lithium can also be found in the Zezuran Desert, a much more dangerous biome filled with extreme heat and hostile conditions. Here, Lithium spawns in caves and tunnels near thermal vents, often requiring deeper exploration and better preparation.
While the Zezuran Desert offers more widespread resource distribution, it is significantly harder to survive in compared to the Great Jaw, making it more of a mid-game farming zone than an early one.
Tools and Preparation Needed for Lithium Mining

Among various tools, the most important tool is the Sonic Resonator, which is required to break open large Lithium deposits.
Without it, your access will be extremely limited, as most valuable nodes are locked behind these breakable formations. Even with the resonator, you must be careful with positioning, since its blast can push you backward and potentially into environmental hazards like the Great Jaw’s closing strands.
Survival preparation is equally important, especially for the Zezuran Desert. Heat protection or adaptations are highly recommended before entering this biome, as extreme temperatures can rapidly drain your health if you’re unprepared.
A reliable underwater vehicle such as the Tadpole is also extremely useful, allowing you to travel deeper and safer distances without running out of oxygen. With the right tools and preparation, Lithium becomes much easier to farm. So, finding the correct tools and unlocking key upgrades not only significantly improve your underwater exploration capabilities but also allow you to collect various important materials like Lithium.
