Individual rescued after fall into ventilation shaft in Centretown

An unidentified individual escaped injury, but still required rescue by firefighters after falling into an open ventilation shaft in Centretown on Saturday afternoon.

The grate covering the ventilation shaft beside a building near the intersection of Bank and Maclaren streets had become dislodged and was also at the bottom of the shaft, allowing the individual to tumble 10-15 feet below ground level, a social-media post by Ottawa Fire Services said.

Firefighters set up a ladder and sent a rescuer down to help the individual out of the ventilation shaft, the post added.

The grate was then re-secured to cover the shaft, Ottawa Fire Services said.
