Both Robert De Niro and Donald Trump have exchanged shots at each other over the years. The former has also been pretty critical of Trump’s current campaign and during a discussion with The Guardian, the actor went at length to explain why he has been so outspoken about the former president. Being a New Yorker himself, the actor initially thought that most “New Yorkers were on to what a fool he is, a joke”, and was flabbergasted when the “country started buying it”.

Further condemning his four-year stay at the office, the Goodfellas star stated that Trump could become president again if “he had any brains”, given the “fragility he created”, but stressed that he shouldn’t be allowed “close to leadership in this country again”.

Many New Yorkers were on to what a fool he is, a joke. But when the country started buying it? I mean, he didn’t win by much. He didn’t win the popular vote. She won. But look what happened. What’s scary is it’s such a fragile thing, to swing like that. And the odd thing about Trump is that if he had any brains he could have become president again. But he doesn’t care. He did stupid things. He’s not somebody who should ever be allowed close to leadership in this country again.

Ahead of the big November election, De Niro is once again voicing his stance against the Home Alone star and even went on to take a dig at Trump’s supporters.

Martin Scorsese Noted One Crucial Difference Between Other Big Actors and Robert de Niro

Opposed to Trump’s comments about De Niro becoming unwatchable in movies, Robert De Niro delivered one of 2023’s best performances with his stint as the menacing William Hale in Killers of the Flower Moon. Speaking of his decades-long personal and working bond with the actor, Martin Scorsese shared “He’s the only one who really knows where I come from”.

While in cases of other big actions, there’s a risk of them taking “over your picture”, with De Niro, Scorsese never felt that.

Very often, if an actor has a lot of power, they could take over your picture. But with him, I never felt that. There was freedom, experimenting, and we were not afraid of anything.

With Martin Scorsese not looking to stop anytime soon, fans hope more collaborations between the two geniuses will keep on coming.

Killers of the Flower Moon is available to stream on Apple TV.
