Jada Smith has always been very candid about her personal life. Using her chat show as a medium to tell her story, the actress has been very vocal about her life experiences, regardless of how uncomfortable it may make her. While most fans know her for talking about her marriage with Will Smith, the actress once revealed one very dark part of her early years in Hollywood.
It would seem that an addiction almost cost Smith everything she was trying to build in the industry. In an episode of her chat show, she confessed that she had a very brutal confrontation with her drug addiction on the set of The Nutty Professor.
A State of Unconsciousness Was Jada Smith’s Wake-Up Call
In a 2021 episode of the Red Table Talk, Jada Smith opened up about quite a dark point in her professional and personal life. Specifically, she revealed that she was struggling with some very serious substance abuse problems during her early years in Hollywood.
The actress seemed to have been struggling with these issues for quite some time. However, it wasn’t until something horrible happened with Smith on the set of The Nutty Professor that she decided to change her lifestyle. The actress revealed that when she was working on the 1996 film, she had a habit of going to the set intoxicated. This ended up being quite a bad decision when she accidentally got a “bad batch of ecstasy.”
I had one incident on ‘Nutty Professor.’ I passed out. I went to work high, and it was a bad batch of ecstasy. And I passed out. I told everybody that I must have had old medication in a vitamin bottle.
Smith ended up passing out when she was working and got a very harsh realization about the state of her life. Although she told everyone that she had some old medication that led to her state, Smith seemed to be very shaken up by what happened to her. The actress confessed that she ended up going “cold turkey” and quitting the drug altogether.
Ecstasy Wasn’t Jada Smith’s Only Vice
Later in the episode, Jada Smith talked about another vice that took over her life. She confessed that she also found it difficult to control her dependency on alcohol. Although she clarified that she wasn’t the kind of person who would drink every day, she had a more functional type of alcoholism.
I wasn’t the type of person who was drinking every day, I was like a weekend party girl. Thursday to Monday morning, I would go.
The actress explained that she was only partying on the weekends. However, when she did, it would be excessive in the highest regard. While Smith has moved past this phase in her life, she cannot help but look back and wonder how she was able to make it past such dark times.
I think back on my life, like, I am a walking miracle, no doubt about that.
Later in the interview, she added that her existence today was a miracle, looking back at the way that she used to get through the day. It is safe to say that the journey that made Smith into who she is today is extremely inspiring.
