Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was arrested last month on s*x trafficking and racketeering charges and reportedly faced multiple allegations and lawsuits on s*xual assault and r*pe. The rapper and hip-hop mogul has been in the industry since the ‘90s and has been associated with acts like Usher, The Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and more.

Combs reportedly grew up in the Mount Vernon district of New York but was born in Harlem. He reportedly moved at the age of 12 but would visit his birthplace to meet his grandmother. He was raised by his mother Janice Combs, who was a model and teacher’s assistant. The rapper reportedly lost his father at the age of 3.

While his mother had told him that his father, Melvin Earl Combs, had died in a car accident, Diddy was reportedly curious about him because everyone in Harlem seemed to know his father. He then told Oprah (via Nicki Swift) that he finally got to know the truth behind his father’s death,

Melvin Combs was reportedly a dr*g dealer in Harlem at the height of the opioid epidemic and would reportedly run in the same circles as Frank Lucas, the gangster portrayed by Denzel Washington in the film American Gangster. His father was reportedly shot (via Find A Grave).

Recently, Diddy’s mother Janice Combs in support of her son after his arrest in New York. According to BBC News, Combs issued a statement saying that though he had made mistakes, he was not the ‘monster’ that the media made him out to be. She also mentioned that he was the victim of a narrative built from lies.

Janic Combs reportedly raised Diddy as a single mother. The rapper has spoken about his poverty-filled upbringing many times before and attributed his aspirational behavior to wanting to get out of such dire situations. His mother also reportedly hid the truth about his father’s death from him. He said in a speech (via XXL),

My mother always told me that he died in a car accident. But something about that it just didn’t feel right. Something was in my soul that was telling me otherwise. So, as soon as I got here I went to the library and I did some research…And when I typed in my father’s name and the day he died, I read in the Amsterdam News that he had been murdered in a drug deal gone bad. Right there in that library, I realized there’s nothing greater than a mother’s love and desire to protect her child.

The rapper is currently detained in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and according to the BBC, is likely to face more than 100 lawsuits for s*xual assault and r*pe.
