Having appeared in six Marvel movies already, there’s been some buzz around Holland returning for a seventh movie (the fourth Spider-Man standalone film). In a recent interview, the 28-year-old Hollywood icon spoke about being in a position in his career where he needs to make choices based on what’s good for him rather than simply doing it because the world wants to see it happen.

Irrespective of which field you’re in, there always comes a point when you must make choices based on how a project or task will benefit you personally. That’s more or less the situation Tom Holland claims to be in.

The Spider-Man: No Way Home star appeared on the Rich Roll Podcast hosted by the iconic Rich Roll, and he expressed his thoughts on what could happen between Marvel and himself in terms of filming more Spider-Man movies or projects related to it in the future.

I’m now at a juncture where I can say no. Now that I’ve been afforded that power, I am struggling to figure out what is the right thing to do… I think the learning curve that I’m on right now is dealing with that new sense of power, making sure that I don’t abuse it. But making sure that I do the best thing for me.

Holland initially explained that he was at Marvel’s “beck and call” for many years and wasn’t necessarily given the privilege to control certain situations. However, he mentioned wanting to do things for himself and not just for the sake of Marvel. He added,

I’m figuring it out. I’m speaking to people and asking questions and you know, I’ve been speaking to Downey a lot. But it is something that keeps me up at night.

Holland assured that he intends to with Marvel but also wants to make sure he does justice to the movies and his character as well. Of the 30+ movies that were released by the franchise, Holland’s three standalone films rank amongst the top 20 highest-grossing projects with Spider-Man: No Way Home being the second highest-grossing Marvel movie of all time (via Box Office Mojo).

While these were some concerns that the icon had to air out, Tom Holland also told Rich Roll that Marvel is currently laying the groundwork for a fourth installment. Variety claims this upcoming movie will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously worked on Sims Liu’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Holland revealed that he read the script for the fourth movie with his beloved girlfriend, Zendaya, who acts as MJ in the storyline. He told Rich Roll,

We have a creative and we have a pitch and a draft, which is excellent. It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.

However, the only thing Marvel is trying to figure out is how to fit Spider-Man into the bigger picture. According to Holland, Marvel has enough time to navigate through the dilemma.

Right now, there isn’t any idea as to what the upcoming Spider-Man film will be about. But the only lead we have is from Spider-Man: No Way Home, as Doctor Strange cast a spell to make the world, including his best friend Ned and MJ forget who Peter Parker was. Spider-Man 4 could start off with a predicament involving that scenario.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies can be streamed on Netflix.
