X-Men ‘97, What If

SUMMARY

  • Marvel's What If...? Season 3 is not living up to the standards of its predecessors and Beau DeMayo is here to rub salt on the wound.
  • He took to X to mention that the final season was bad, making an insulting comment about it.
  • Interestingly, the third season of What If...? is headlined by Matthew Chauncey, who replaced DeMayo as the head writer in X-Men '97.

Beau DeMayo thinks Marvel did a bad job with the new season of What If…?. The X-Men ’97 creator, who was earlier pushed out from the franchise, didn’t even bother to pinpoint what went wrong with What If…? Season 3. A general consensus among critics and audiences suggested that the third season is proving to be an underwhelming conclusion to one of the Marvel Multiverse Saga’s best ideas.

DeMayo and Marvel Studios do not share a great relationship after the studio fired him from X-Men ’97 over egregious findings against him during an internal investigation. The studio’s explanation for his firing came after DeMayo took to his socials to accuse Marvel of unreasonably removing him from the writing credits of X-Men ’97 Season 2.

Beau DeMayo gives his verdict for What If…? Season 3 and it’s brutal

Beau DeMayo went after Marvel in the most brutal way when he attacked the new season of What If…?. His review for the series read, “yikes just yikes.” He further mocked the series by sharing that he would’ve watched the series to give more notes but he had “some water to watch boil.” While DeMayo may be biased against the studio, there is some truth to his brutal review.

I’d watch more to give notes on how it could’ve easily been done better but I have some water to watch boil

Critics are largely divided on the currently running third and final season of What If…?. The Rotten Tomatoes rating for the third season is also a significant drop from its earlier seasons. As of writing, the Tomatometer score of the series stood at 75% from 12 reviews, while the Popcornmeter score is an even disappointing 57%.

Jeffrey Wright‘s The Watcher returns in the series, which will air its eight episodes back to back from December 22 to December 29. Interestingly, Matthew Chauncey, who replaced DeMayo as the X-Men ’97 head writer, also replaced A.C. Bradley as the head writer of this season.

One of the major issues with the final season was the restrictions the stories placed upon themselves. Instead of exploring anything and everything related to Marvel, it is believed that this third season is trying to fit things into the Multiverse Saga. The episodes of the current season include:

  1. What If… the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?
  2. What If… Agatha Went to Hollywood?
  3. What If… the Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier?
  4. What If… Howard the Duck Got Hitched?
  5. What If… the Emergence Destroyed the Earth?
  6. What If… 1872?
  7. What If… the Watcher Disappeared?
  8. What If… What If?

Things can still turn around for the series in its final two episodes. The title of the last episode itself suggests that the series would open up several more multiverse possibilities before its conclusion.

Beau DeMayo took to his socials to accuse Marvel of unreasonably removing him from the writing credits for season two of X-Men ’97. He shared that Marvel’s reason was a post he shared for Pride Month – a shirtless pic of him as Cyclops. He shared that the studio had a “troubling pattern” of mistreatment during his time working on X-Men ’97 and Blade.

Marvel immediately responded to the allegations with a statement to Variety, sharing that DeMayo was “terminated following an internal investigation.” They added that the studio severed ties with the writer after the “egregious nature of the findings”. An unnamed source told Variety that the investigation found evidence of s*xual misconduct.

While the official version of things doesn’t state anything explicitly, insider Jeff Sneider reported gross s*xual misconduct allegations against DeMayo (via GameRant). According to The Insneider, the X-Men ’97 showrunner sent photos of himself in “states of undress” to young male staffers.

DeMayo was allegedly dressed in superhero costumes and posed in a s*xually suggestive manner. The creator allegedly sent these photos in the pretense of inspiration for the show. The insider report also alleged the writer groped an assistant inappropriately multiple times on set.

What If…? episodes are now available for streaming on Disney+.
