Many would be wondering if the famed horror filmmaker will try to make another Hellboy movie to close the saga to a trilogy, but comic book creator Mike Mignola believes del Toro won’t attempt to do so.

Mike Mignola Comments On Guillermo del Toro’s Possible Return to Helm Hellboy 3

Brian Taylor’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the latest iteration in the action horror film series. The demonic character was first introduced in Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 film, which spawned a sequel in 2008. Despite their critical successes, he never got to make another follow-up installment.

Mike Mignola created Hellboy in 1993 for Dark Horse Comics. It gained worldwide fame after its big-screen adaptation with Ron Perlman as the titular character. When asked if he thinks del Toro will pick up the title anytime soon, Mignola replied (via Forbes): “I just can’t see him coming back to doing Hellboy again.”

Working on several upcoming projects such as Frankenstein, The Buried Giant, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2, the filmmaker has got his hands full. Mignola regrets that del Toro won’t be able to finish his trilogy. “It was kind of a dream thing, but I don’t think it was ever realistic,” says the comic book artist, later adding how expensive it would be to make a sequel with such scanty profit from the past two films.

Hellboy is given another chance to introduce himself to the new generation of fans. With Jack Kesy in the lead, the current iteration adapts a fan-favorite storyline from the comics. Mignola is happy with the outcome of the movie. “All my favorite scenes from The Crooked Man are in there,” he said. The previous Hellboy movies had their own thing, but Mignola claimed that the 2024 version is “the most faithful film.”

It seems like del Toro won’t be able to return to helm another Hellboy movie despite previously expressing interest in continuing the saga. With the first two movies barely breaking even, no studio would finance a third attempt.

Guillermo del Toro has already provided fans with numerous updates on Hellboy 3 no longer pushing forward. In 2014, he responded in a Reddit AMA question that “it is proven almost impossible to finance”. He said that if he is a multimillionaire, he would finance it himself.

Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it

The director also shared a tweet back in 2017 that the much-awaited sequel won’t happen and it is final. Two years later, Lionsgate Films revived the franchise with Neil Marshall at the helm. Perhaps it is safe to assume that del Toro’s time with the Hellboy franchise has long been over.

Hellboy movies are currently available to watch on Prime Video.
