In Graveyard Keeper, you will be collecting a lot of resources, and one of them is going to be River Sand. While it is a basic resource, it is also an essential one as it is used for crafting glass and other useful items.
Although it’s simple to gather, it isn’t available right away; you must first unlock the ability through progression. However, once available, Sand becomes a consistent and valuable resource that will support your crafting systems throughout the game.

To begin collecting River Sand, you first need to unlock it (similar to Clay). The process for that is very simple: you simply need to progress in the main storyline of Bishops. After speaking with him and reaching the point where he asks about a bowl, the ability to gather it becomes available.
Once unlocked, you can collect Sand by equipping any shovel and mining sand mounds found near water. Before you start hoarding the sand, it is worth remembering that interacting with these mounds consumes a small amount of energy but provides a steady supply of sand.
There are five fixed locations where you can find sand mounds:
- Four are located around the waterfall west of your home (along the river, which flows across the map)
- One is on the beach, northeast of the Village and north of the Lighthouse
Additionally, it stacks up to 50 units in a single slot that cannot be decomposed. For every 10 sand collected, you will consume 2 energy units (not a significant amount). Since it is always found near water, these locations are your only reliable sources.
River Sand Recipes and Benefits

It also appears in several secondary recipes that support other crafting systems.
Before diving into various recipes, it is always necessary to learn them at the study table. Studying it rewards you with 10 Green Tech Points. However, this process requires 1 Faith, 1 Science, and some energy, making it a worthwhile early-game research option.
Below are the main crafting recipes:
| Glass (x1) (Furnace I) | – 2× River Sand – 1× Water | – 20 Fuel – 1:00 minute |
| Glass (x2) (Furnace II) | – 4× River Sand – 2× Water | – 30 Fuel – 1:00 minute |
| Glass (x3) (Furnace III) | – 6× River Sand – 2× Water | – 50 Fuel – 1:00 minute |
| Polishing Paste (x1) (Carpenter Workbench) | – 1× River Sand – 1× Oil – 1× Ceramic Bowl | – 5 Energy – 0:04 Seconds |
| Clean Paper (x2) (Desk) | – 1× Ruined Book – 1× River Sand | – 5 Energy – 0:02 seconds |
| Nails (x1) (Cooking Table) | – 1× Bloody Nails – 1× River Sand – 1× Water | – 2 Energy – 0:01 Seconds |
Overall, one thing is clear: it is easy to collect once unlocked and remains a crucial resource for both crafting and progression, particularly when producing glass and refining materials.
