How Minecraft Enchantments Work

Minecraft enchantments are one of the core parts of the gameplay. Released in 2011, Mojang Studios’ open-world sandbox survival game has taken the gaming world by storm. Initially, it took time for Minecraft to build a fanbase, but now it has a stable player base who never gets bored of grinding the game.

The gameplay takes players to a world where they need to use the given resources to craft necessary items and equipment to survive and progress. Therefore, at points, if you feel like you need more powerful axes or pickaxes, enchanting them will serve your purpose. There’s a step-by-step process of enchanting items, and here we will give you a detailed walkthrough. 

What Are Minecraft Enchantments?

Minecraft’s world is so mysterious that even after grinding for years, still a lot of things remain undiscovered. So, if you are willing to know the unknown, powerful weapons are a must.

Well, powerful weapons can’t be found immediately after starting the game, but players need to upgrade them with magic and spells as they progress. That’s when enchantment comes in to play in Minecraft. 

Basically, enchantments allow players to bestow powerful magical abilities on their weapons. Fortunately, a wide range of Minecraft weapons and equipment can be enchanted using this in-game system, including axes, pickaxes, swords, bows, and even armor. 

However, this process can’t be done in different ways. Either players can do it by crafting an Enchantment Table or using an Anvil. Here, we will elaborate on both methods to give a complete knowledge of the process. 

How to Craft a Minecraft Enchantment Table?

Players need to stock 4x Obsidian, 2x Diamonds, and 1x Book to craft an Enchantment Table. Among these three items, Obsidian is the hardest to find in the Minecraft world.

First, players need to find a flowing lava source and then pour water on one side. When the lava flow interacts with water, Obsidian will be made. Mine these Obsidian blocks. 

The next thing you need for an Enchantment Table is two diamonds. Players need to mine for this extremely rare resource. Diamonds can be found randomly anywhere, and iron axes or diamond axes are the only way to collect them. 

Finally, comes the Book. Books are comparatively easy to get. Players can locate papers in the village, or they can craft them using Suage Cane. 3 Papers are required to craft a Book.

Once you have all three ingredients, open the Crafting Menu to build an Enchanting Table. After it is crafted, players need Lapis Lazuli for every enchantment process. 

How to Enchant Items and Equipment Using Enchantment Table?

Now that you have placed the Enchantment Table, interact with it, and it will open a new window, where the two empty slots will have Lapis Lazuli and the item you want to enchant. Once these two items are placed, you will see the right-hand side boxes have three different enchantment options. 

Of course, you can’t read what’s written in them, so hover over them to check which enchantments are available for that specific item. The options will come based on what item you want to enchant. Anyway, sometimes the number of Lapis Lazuli also matters. 

Here’s a twist. Not every enchantment can be obtained at every level. The numbers that are written on the right side of the enchantments show the level you need to reach to use that particular one. So, if you are at enchantment level 5, you can’t use level 8 enchantments. 

The interesting part is that levels are essential. They decide how good an enchantment is. The higher the enchantment level, the more the enchantment will be powerful. So, you must increase your enchantment level, and that can be done by placing bookshelves around the Enchantment Table.

To reach the highest level, place fifteen bookshelves around the table. Creating two-level bookshelves is better to save space and fit all the shelves. 

How to Enchant Items and Equipment Using Anvil?

Anvil can also enchant items and weapons. However, this process requires you to gather Enchanted Books. If you want to enchant your sword or axe with a specific enchantment, you have to have the book in your possession.

Now, the question is where to find Enchanted Books. Well, these can either be made using the Enchantment Table or found from chests inside the dungeons. 

The best way to get the Enchanted Books is to trade them with Villagers. Players can trade Emeralds for the Enchanted Books, but mostly this is an expensive method.

Once you have the book and the weapon or armor, bring them both to the anvil and interact with it. This will open a new interface where players can place both the book and the equipment that they want to enchant. As soon as you place them, the enchantment process is done.

Here, players must place these items in a proper position. For example, the left side slot is for the target item, and the right-side slot is for the sacrificed item. Therefore, the item you want to enchant will be placed on the left side and the book will be placed on the right side.
