House of the Dragon: Every Dragon’s Fate in Fire & Blood, Explained

Dragons are the ultimate symbols of Targaryen power, but not all of them survive the brutal chaos of the civil war, as we’ve already seen in House of the Dragon. George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood reveals the tragic, fiery, and shocking fate of these beasts before, during, and after the Dance of the Dragons.

From legendary creatures that dominate the skies to young dragons cut down before their time, each loss changed the future of Westeros. Whether they fell in battle, met gruesome ends, or outlived the conflict, every dragon had a lasting mark on the realm’s history. Here’s the fate of every dragon as recorded in Fire & Blood.

Aegon The Conqueror’s Original Trinity

1 Balerion Died of Old Age

The mighty Balerion, better known as the Black Dread, met the only end no dragon could escape: old age. The largest and most fearsome dragon in Targaryen history, Balerion carried Aegon I Targaryen during Aegon’s Conquest, helping forge the Seven Kingdoms with dragonfire.

By the time Viserys I Targaryen claimed him, Balerion was slow, scarred, and far past his prime. He died peacefully in 94 AC, decades before the Dance of the Dragons began, marking the end of an era. His death deprived House Targaryen of its greatest living weapon, leaving no dragon that could rival the Black Dread’s immense size, power, or legendary reputation.

2 Meraxes Was Felled by a Scorpion Bolt

Meraxes faced a shocking death during the First Dornish War. While carrying Rhaenys Targaryen on an assault against Hellholt, the great dragon was struck in the eye by a massive scorpion bolt. The single shot pierced Meraxes’ skull, killing the dragon almost instantly.

As it crashed to the ground, Rhaenys was also lost, though the exact circumstances of her death remain uncertain in Fire & Blood. Meraxes’ fall proved that even the mightiest dragons were not invincible. The loss devastated House Targaryen and transformed the war in Dorne into a long, bitter conflict fueled by vengeance rather than swift conquest.

3 Vhagar Was Slain in the Battle Above the Gods Eye

Vhagar outlived generations of dragons before meeting a spectacular end during the Dance of the Dragons. Originally ridden by Visenya Targaryen, one of Aegon the Conqueror’s sister-wives, Vhagar later passed through several riders before being claimed by Aemond Targaryen. By then, she was the largest and most powerful living dragon in Westeros.

Her final battle came above the Gods Eye, where she clashed with Daemon Targaryen and his dragon, Caraxes. Locked together in a brutal aerial fight, both dragons plunged into the lake below. Vhagar perished alongside Aemond, bringing the reign of the last surviving Conquest-era dragon to a dramatic and devastating close.

4 Quicksilver Was Torn Apart by Balerion

Although not part of the Conquest trinity, Quicksilver was one of the earliest Targaryen dragons that lived. She met her end when she faced Balerion the Black Dread in a deadly clash between rival Targaryen factions. The young she-dragon was ridden by Prince Aegon Targaryen, who challenged his uncle Maegor I Targaryen in a failed attempt to claim the Iron Throne.

The older dragon easily overpowered Quicksilver, tearing her apart in the sky and killing Aegon in the battle. Her death ended the rebellion instantly and proved that few dragons could survive a direct confrontation with the Black Dread. Quicksilver’s fall became another reminder of Balerion’s unmatched dominance among the dragons of Westeros.

House Black’s Dragons in Fire & Blood

1 Meleys Was Killed at Rook’s Rest

Meleys, known as the Red Queen, met her end during the Dance of the Dragons at the brutal Battle at Rook’s Rest. Once ridden by Rhaenys Targaryen, Meleys was one of the fastest and most experienced dragons alive when the civil war began.

She fought bravely against the combined forces of Vhagar and Sunfyre, carrying Rhaenys into a battle she could not win. After a fierce aerial struggle, Meleys was brought down and killed. Her death was a devastating blow to the Blacks, proving that even the mightiest dragons could fall in the Targaryen war.

2 Caraxes Died After Killing Vhagar

Caraxes, the fearsome Blood Wyrm, met his end in one of the most legendary dragon battles in Westeros. During the civil war, Caraxes was ridden by Daemon Targaryen as he faced Aemond and the massive Vhagar above the Gods Eye.

The two dragons tore each other apart in a brutal midair clash, but Caraxes managed to kill Vhagar before falling into the lake below. Though gravely wounded, the Blood Wyrm crawled from the water and died on the shore. His victory came at the cost of his own life, making his final battle one of the greatest dragon duels ever recorded.

3 Syrax Was Slain by the King’s Landing Mob

Rhaenyra Targaryen’s she-dragon, Syrax, died during the chaos of the Storming of the Dragonpit. Drawn by the scent of bloodshed, Syrax flew to the Dragonpit, where a furious mob had gathered to destroy the dragons inside.

Archmaester Gyldayn noted that she could have stayed in the sky and burned her attackers from above, but instead descended into the chaos and fought the rioters on the ground, killing dozens with her teeth and claws. The exact details of her death remain unclear, but what’s certain is that Syrax was eventually overwhelmed and slain by the mob.

4 Seasmoke Was Killed by Vermithor at Tumbleton

Formerly ridden by Laenor Velaryon and later bonded with Addam Velaryon, Seasmoke sustained fatal injuries during the Second Battle of Tumbleton, resulting in his death. In the chaos of the battle, Seasmoke faced Vermithor, the mighty Bronze Fury.

The two dragons engaged in a brutal fight, and it was speculated that Addam likely acted to protect his soldiers on the ground, despite knowing Seasmoke could not match Vermithor’s size and strength. The riderless Tessarion soon joined the fight, and all three dragons battled amid mud, blood, and smoke. Vermithor ultimately killed Seasmoke after locking his teeth into his neck and ripping off his head.

5 Vermax Was Shot Down at the Gullet

Vermax’s final flight came during the Battle of the Gullet, where the young dragon fought in one of the most destructive conflicts during the war. Ridden by Jacaerys Velaryon, Vermax joined the battle to defend the Velaryon fleet against the invading Triarchy. Flying low over the ships, Vermax became vulnerable to enemy attacks.

According to the lore, he was struck by bolts from crossbows or scorpions before crashing down. The exact details vary, but both dragon and rider were killed in the battle. Vermax’s death was a huge blow to the Blacks, costing them one of Rhaenyra’s heirs and an important dragon early in the war.

6 Arrax Was Devoured by Vhagar

One of the earliest dragon deaths during the civil war, Arrax was easily overwhelmed after crossing paths with the much larger Vhagar. After arriving at Storm’s End, Lucerys Velaryon found himself caught in a heated confrontation with Aemond. Once outside the castle, the latter pursued his nephew on Vhagar, seeking revenge for the eye Lucerys had taken from him years earlier.

Though Arrax was younger and faster, the raging storm gave him little chance against the battle-tested Vhagar. Above Shipbreaker Bay, the dragons clashed briefly before Arrax was torn apart and fell into the stormy waters below. His death, along with Lucerys’, became the spark that ignited the brutal civil war.

7 Moondancer Died After the Fight with Sunfyre

The Fall of Dragonstone saw Moondancer’s tragic demise in one of the war’s final dragon battles. When Aegon II captured Dragonstone, Baela Targaryen escaped and reached her dragon’s stable, freeing Moondancer to face the approaching king.

As Aegon arrived on Sunfyre, Moondancer attacked the wounded golden dragon with incredible speed, avoiding his flames while tearing into his body. However, Sunfyre’s fire eventually blinded her, and the two dragons crashed to the ground. Though Moondancer fought fiercely, she was overwhelmed by Sunfyre’s greater size and strength and was ultimately killed and her carcass devoured.

8 Stormcloud Died Saving Aegon III

Stormcloud’s life was short, but his final act was a heroic moment. The young dragon belonged to Aegon III, who was forced to go to Pentos during the chaos of the war. Unfortunately, their ship encountered the Triarchy in the Gullet. When Aegon and his brother Viserys II attempted to escape, Stormcloud carried Aegon away from danger after the ship was attacked.

The young dragon suffered severe injuries from arrows and bolts during the flight. Stormcloud managed to bring Aegon safely to land but died shortly after from his wounds, sacrificing himself to save his rider.

9 Vermithor Fell at the Second Battle of Tumbleton

Vermithor’s fate was sealed during the chaos of the Second Battle of Tumbleton. After his rider, Hugh Hammer, was killed, the great bronze dragon was left riderless. When knights tried to slay him on the ground, Vermithor slaughtered them before taking to the sky and unleashing his fury upon both armies.

Addam and Seasmoke confronted him, but the older and larger dragon gained the advantage, ripping Seasmoke’s head away in the struggle. However, Vermithor’s wounds were too severe. Unable to fly with his fallen enemy’s remains, he collapsed and died, ending the life of one of the greatest dragons of the Dance.

10 Silverwing Survived and Became Wild

Silverwing survived the Second Battle of Tumbleton, but the chaos of it changed her fate forever. During the night attack led by Addam and Seasmoke, Ulf White slept through the fighting, leaving Silverwing to take flight without her rider. A crossbow bolt struck toward her, but she avoided the battle and circled the battlefield for hours. She returned the following night, landing among the corpses of Vermithor, Seasmoke, and Tessarion.

Legends claimed she tried to lift Vermithor’s wing, though Archmaester Gyldayn doubted the tale. Afterward, she fed on the burned remains of men and animals. When Ulf was poisoned, Silverwing became riderless and eventually turned wild, living alone on an island in Red Lake.

11 Morning Survived the Dance of the Dragons

In the book, Rhaena Targaryen is bonded to Morning (in House of the Dragon, it’s Sheepstealer). She was one of the few beasts to survive the Dance of the Dragons, though her fate remained uncertain after the devastating civil war.

Unlike many of the great dragons that died in battle, Morning never fought in the major conflicts of the Dance. As the war ended and the dragons slowly disappeared from the world, Morning was among the last known living dragons. It is unknown, however, when the dragon died, but it is believed to have happened some time before the death of the last dragon.

12 Tyraxes Was Slain During the Storming of the Dragonpit

Tyraxes met a violent end during the Storming of the Dragonpit, when an enormous mob in King’s Landing rose against the Targaryens and their dragons. Bonded to Prince Joffrey Velaryon, Tyraxes was chained inside the Dragonpit when thousands of armed rioters broke through its gates.

Although still young, the dragon fought savagely, unleashing blasts of dragonfire and killing so many attackers. Hundreds of men and women armed with swords, spears, and axes rushed inside, but as Tyraxes turned to face them, his heavy steel chains became tangled around him, leaving him unable to move freely or defend himself. Trapped and overwhelmed, he was mortally wounded by the attackers, with several later claiming the killing blow.

House Green’s Dragons in Fire & Blood

1 Dreamfyre Was Buried in the Dragonpit Collapse

During the Storming of the Dragonpit, Dreamfyre met a brutal end. While thousands of rioters swarmed the building, she was the only dragon able to break her heavy chains. Free at last, she flew into the air, circling inside the massive dome and raining fire down on the attackers. She killed more people than all the other trapped dragons combined.

However, the mob fought back relentlessly. Archers shot countless arrows at her, and whenever she landed, men swarmed her until she was forced back into the sky. The final blow came when a crossbow bolt slashed her eye. Blinded and driven mad by pain, Dreamfyre lost control. She flew straight up and crashed heavily into the great stone ceiling. The impact shattered the stone dome, sending tons of heavy rubble crashing down to crush both the dragon and the mob below.

2 Sunfyre Succumbed to Battle Wounds

Sunfyre ultimately succumbed to an accumulation of devastating battle wounds. Already heavily scarred and partially crippled from brutal clashes at Rook’s Rest and against the wild dragon Grey Ghost, the final blow to his survival came during his desperate duel against Moondancer on Dragonstone.

Though much smaller, the quick Moondancer ambushed the injured golden dragon from above. She slashed a deep gash down Sunfyre’s back and tore at his already damaged wing. Even after Sunfyre blinded her with fire, Moondancer slammed into him, ripping chunks of flesh from his neck as they crashed to the ground.

Sunfyre won the fight using his heavy weight, but the victory was fatal. His new wounds never healed. The great beast grew weaker, lost the ability to fly, and died from infections a few weeks later.

3 Tessarion Was Mortally Wounded and Mercy-Killed

Tessarion suffered a tragic end during the chaotic Second Battle of Tumbleton. When the Blacks launched a surprise night attack on her camp, the Blue Queen took to the sky without a rider. She joined a brutal, chaotic three-way brawl against the dragons Seasmoke and Vermithor.

While the other two dragons died in the dirt, Tessarion survived the clash but was left mortally wounded. Her wings were shredded, and her body was completely broken. Writhing on the ground in agony by the next afternoon, she was finally mercy-killed when a longbowman shot three arrows directly into her eye.

4 Shrykos Was Killed in the Dragonpit

The young dragon Shrykos was not spared from the horrors of the Storming of the Dragonpit. An angry mob, driven mad by a one-handed prophet called the Shepherd, broke into the building. Shrykos had never been ridden and was trapped by heavy chains, making it impossible for her to escape.

Even though she was chained up, she fought back hard and killed dozens of people. Her end came when a woodsman named Hobb the Hewer jumped onto her neck. As Shrykos roared and twisted to throw him off, Hobb clamped his legs around her and hit her skull seven times with his axe, shouting the name of a god with each strike. The final blow split her skull and drove deep into her brain.

5 Morghul Was Slaughtered in the Dragonpit

Like Shrykos, Morghul was also a victim of the angry King’s Landing mob. He had never been ridden and remained securely shackled by heavy iron chains when the people breached the underground stalls.

Though unable to fly or escape, Morghul used his teeth and flames to slaughter dozens of rioters who rushed his nest. He was eventually killed by a fanatic known as the Burning Knight. Covered in heavy armor, the knight charged blindly through the dragon’s wall of fire. As Morghul roared, the knight drove his great spear straight into the dragon’s eye, thrusting it deep into his brain until the beast collapsed dead.

The Wild Dragons

1 Sheepstealer Vanished with Nettles

House of the Dragon has a different storyline for Sheepstealer; in Martin’s Fire & Blood, however, the dragon met a mysterious fate by completely vanishing from Westeros alongside his rider, Nettles. After Queen Rhaenyra ordered the young dragonseed’s execution out of jealousy, Daemon allowed Nettles and her dragon to escape from Maidenpool into the morning mist.

They flew away and never returned to the war. Years later, rumors placed them in the Mountains of the Moon. Regarded as a god by the primitive Burned Men clan, Sheepstealer lived in a hidden mountain cave, where the clan brought him offerings of sheep and cattle. Eventually, the dragon and Nettles vanished entirely from the mountains, leaving their final fate a permanent mystery.

2 The Cannibal Disappeared into Legend

The notoriously vicious wild dragon known as The Cannibal survived the entire Dance of the Dragons, only to vanish into myth. Living on the back side of Dragonstone, he earned his terrifying name by feeding on dragon carcasses, eggs, and newborn hatchlings. Because of his extreme hostility, no rider ever successfully claimed or tamed him.

After the war ended, the massive coal-black beast mysteriously flew away from his longtime nesting grounds on the volcano. His final fate remains entirely unknown, though sailors spread legends claiming he eventually made his lair on a distant island, passing out of living memory and into Westerosi folklore.

3 Grey Ghost Was Hunted Down by Sunfyre

The wild dragon Grey Ghost unfortunately met a violent end on Dragonmont. Preferring to feed on fish, Grey Ghost avoided humans and hid safely in a smoking vent on the volcano. His peaceful existence ended when Aegon II and his severely injured dragon, Sunfyre, secretly returned to the island to hide.

Sunfyre, though half-crippled, caught Grey Ghost by surprise. A brutal aerial battle erupted in the sky above the volcano. The golden dragon’s immense weight and raw ferocity overwhelmed the wild dragon, sending Grey Ghost crashing to the earth. Sunfyre tore him apart and tore chunks of flesh from his carcass, leaving his partially devoured remains to be found by the island’s garrison.
