James Gunn’s new DCU is finally coming together with updates from several projects popping up. The DC Studios co-chairman recently attended the New York Comic Con, where he provided an update on several upcoming projects, including his Superman movie, starring David Corenswet in the titular role. During the event, Gunn reflected on working with Corenswet.

Gunn praised his leading man, who is bound to become the cornerstone of his new universe. However, one line Gunn used to compliment Corenswet will certainly not sit well with Henry Cavill fans. The latter was booted from the role of the Man of Steel as Gunn instead chose to cast Corenswet. Here is what James Gunn had to say about David Corenswet that might upset Henry Cavill fans.

James Gunn Calls Superman Actor David Corenswet the Best Action Star

DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn was in attendance at the New York Comic Con, where he discussed the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos. While Gunn mostly focused on the series, he also spoke to fans about other upcoming DC projects, including Superman, which he wrote and directed.

The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman and has wrapped principal photography. During the panel, Gunn spoke about his experience working with Corenswet and praised the actor for his performance, especially in terms of his action capability.

He is the movie star that everyone just dreams he could possibly be. I don’t think anyone really understands the depth of this guy’s talent dramatically, comedically. He’s the best physical action star I’ve probably ever worked with.

Gunn made the above statement (via The Hollywood Reporter), implying that Corenswet was not only a better movie star but also a better action star than any other actor he had collaborated with in the past.

Gunn’s comments will not sit well with die-hard fans of Henry Cavill, who many believe is the ideal template for Superman. Furthermore, unlike Corenswet, Cavill has a proven track record of action movies, appearing in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Argylle.

Despite Cavill arguably being the bigger and more proven action star, he had never worked with Gunn. As a result, the DC Studios head’s comment about Corenswet being the best action star still stands, even though it might be upsetting for some Cavill fans.

James Gunn Provided an Update on When We Might See First Superman Footage

During the same event, Gunn also shared an update on Superman, confirming that the film was well into the post-production stage, with editing work underway on the highly anticipated project. However, Gunn added that while editing was progressing well, a trailer was still some time away.

It won’t be too long before we see a trailer, but it also won’t be too soon.

Gunn stated the above, suggesting that fans will likely have to wait for a while before seeing the first official footage from the movie.

Considering that the movie was still being edited, it is safe to say that plenty of post-production work is left despite Gunn confirming a rough cut had been finalized. Moreover, the footage will also require heavy visual effects work before a trailer can be locked. Therefore, Gunn’s comments about the timeline for the trailer are understandable. However, with a summer 2025 release date, a trailer cannot be too far off.
