The HBO Harry Potter series has made a key move in winning over fans by doing something the films received a lot of flak for: casting Peeves, a ghostly, trickster-like Poltergeist. The role will be played by Peter Serafinowicz, according to Entertainment Weekly. This has been a long time coming, given that the character was actually cast in the films and even had scenes shot.
In the Warner Bros. films, which starred Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and Daniel Radcliffe, Peeves was set to be played by British actor Rik Mayall. However, the character’s final look failed to resonate with the crew, and as a result, he was cut. To this day, the footage has not been made public, not even in the Ultimate Editions released by Warner Bros. Different versions of the character, however, have appeared in games.

A poltergeist in the Wizarding World is an amortal, indestructible spirit of chaos. Usually formless, poltergeists inhabit Muggle homes, moving objects around and causing mischief in buildings full of young people, such as Hogwarts. Agents of chaos and disorder, they can pass through walls, fly, and even turn invisible, often using magic to aid in their tricks. Peeves, for example, once used a curse to make students fall ill.
Peeves has been at Hogwarts since the castle’s founding and claims he will remain there long after most of the students are gone. That does not stop him from helping troublemakers like the Weasley twins. Cowed only by the Bloody Baron and Albus Dumbledore himself, Peeves is one of the two exceptions to the rule that poltergeists are formless beings. In particular, he delights in making up rhymes and tormenting the castle’s Squib caretaker, Filch. One of his finest moments came during the resistance against Dolores Umbridge, when he tried to unscrew a chandelier so it would fall on her and received subtle help from Professor Minerva McGonagall herself.

Chris Columbus revealed on The Thursday Murder Club that he was excited to see Peeves adapted in the HBO series. The version of the character that he conceived was unable to be part of the final product, given that he was not happy with how the character looked. Regarding the cut, he said:
That’s the thing I am probably most excited about in terms of the HBO series. I wanna see how they do Peeves, because we could never. We had designs for Peeves, but they never were appealing. They were kind of, I don’t wanna say grotesque, but we would have just turned the audience off. So we decided not to show Peeves. But, Rik Mayall.’s performance was fantastic. He would have been a great Peeves.
The HBO series is going to take a much more nuanced approach to the source material of Harry Potter, keeping scenes and characters that were cut from the films because of run-time issues. This has some fans excited, but the consensus online has largely been against the show, thanks to it’s continued association with J.K. Rowling.
Which other character that was cut from the films are you excited to see in the show? Let us know in the comments!
Harry Potter‘s first eight-episode season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is going to begin streaming on HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
