Ghost in the Shell Director Officially Returns to Resurrect Mecha in Upcoming 2027 Gundam Anime

The words Gundam and Kenji Kamiyama already sound like a dangerous combination, and in the best possible way. The director who helped turn Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex into one of anime’s defining science-fiction series is now rebuilding Gundam from the ground up with Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO (pronounced “Alex Zero”).

But this is not simply another alternate-universe Gundam. It is the opening chapter of a brand-new history designed to stretch from anime into games and beyond.

Ghost in the Shell’s Kenji Kamiyama Reinvents Gundam From Zero

Kamiyama is not being attached to Mobile Suit Gundam RG: XARX-ZERO merely for name recognition. He directed the 2002 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, a series that brought Masamune Shirow’s dense cyberpunk world to television and became a major turning point in Kamiyama’s career. The official Gundam site notes that the series helped bring its hardcore science-fiction appeal to a broader television audience.

That background makes his new Gundam anime assignment particularly intriguing. Kamiyama has said that he has been a Gundam fan since he was 15, and when he was offered the chance to create a story in a completely new timeline, he approached the challenge by asking what makes Gundam Gundam without simply recycling its familiar pieces. His answer was essentially to start from zero.

That philosophy is baked into the RG Project, a multimedia initiative connecting XARX-ZERO with GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT inside one continuous new setting. Kamiyama serves as director and series composer, with SOLA ANIMATION producing the anime, SUNRISE handling planning, and Bandai Namco Filmworks producing it. Toh EnJoe oversees the science-fiction setting, Eiichi Shimizu designs the Gundam, STATO provides the original character designs, Miyako Takasu handles character design and supervises animation direction, and Go Shiina composes the music.

The result is a new Gundam story that swaps the familiar Universal Century machinery for an entirely fresh mythology. At its center is Ray Azumi, a war orphan who lost his parents during an Apocalypse attack and becomes the pilot of the experimental Gundam Zero, model XARX-0.

Story Is Set 100 Years Before the Upcoming GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT Game

The RG Project’s biggest trick is its timeline. Mobile Suit Gundam RG: XARX-ZERO takes place in A.A. 45, or the 45th year of the After Apocalypse era; not “45 years after the Apocalypse” as a standalone description of the story’s premise. A.A. 1 begins in the year humanity abandons Earth after the catastrophe.

Before that collapse, an Autonomous Interstellar Object arrives from another galaxy and gives humanity three revolutionary technologies: Gravity Control, FTL Communication, and Cognitive Materialization. Less than a decade later, the Object runs rampant, generating an aggressive, self-proliferating ecosystem humanity names the Apocalypse. After three months of fighting around Earth, humanity is forced to abandon the planet, establishing A.A. 1.

By A.A. 45, generations have grown up on the Moon and in space colonies, knowing the Apocalypse as an everyday reality. That is when Ray awakens on the lunar surface, opening the story of XARX-ZERO. Then comes the fascinating part: GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT jumps roughly 100 years forward into the same history. The game is now officially scheduled for March 5, 2027, and its official material confirms that it shares the XARX-ZERO universe while remaining playable as a standalone story.

So this is not an anime adaptation of a game arriving first and foremost to sell another Gundam story. XARX-ZERO establishes the beginning of a new Gundam history, while Rogue Orbit explores the world roughly a century later. Kamiyama is not simply returning to science fiction. He has been handed the keys to an entire new galaxy of possibilities, and this time, there is no old timeline to play it safe with.
