Game of Thrones Officially Finds New Streaming Release on Prime Video (But There’s a Catch)

George R.R. Martin’s pop-culture titan Game of Thrones has officially secured a fresh streaming destination on Amazon Prime Video, but there is a major catch for domestic viewers. Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that HBO Max is expanding its international footprint by launching as an add-on subscription through Prime Video Channels and Hulu starting October 1, 2026. On Prime Video, the service will be offered in both Standard and Premium tiers, unlocking full access to HBO’s prestige vault (via Warner Bros. Discovery Press).

However, this high-profile expansion is strictly limited to Japan, leaving Western viewers unable to stream the Seven Kingdoms through Amazon. Japanese subscribers can now access House of the Dragon, Succession, and The Last of Us directly without a standalone app via a dedicated HBO Max hub inside both platforms. Notably, on Hulu Japan, the HBO Max Standard Tier will be included at no extra charge for existing subscribers.

The launch is far more than just a Westeros showcase. In addition to every season of Game of Thrones and its hit prequel House of the Dragon, subscribers who purchase either the Standard or Premium add-on tier gain instant access to DC Studios blockbusters, Warner Bros. theatrical hits, and acclaimed HBO dramas like Euphoria and The White Lotus. The highly anticipated Harry Potter series is also set to debut at Christmas this year.

For Western audiences, the streaming landscape remains unchanged. Viewers in North America and other international regions where the standalone platform operates must continue accessing the realm of Westeros directly through HBO Max or authorized domestic bundle packages. In Japan, HBO Max will be available only on Prime Video and Hulu Japan from October 1.
